Dhanush Responds to Backlash Over Raayan Award

Dhanush has addressed the growing criticism surrounding the honours received by Raayan and Captain Miller at the 72nd National Film Awards. Raayan was selected as Best Tamil Film, while Dhanush received a Special Mention for his performance in Captain Miller. The film also won the award for Best Feature Film Promoting National, Social and Environmental Values.

The announcements triggered a debate among Tamil cinema audiences, with several viewers arguing that other acclaimed releases deserved greater recognition. Much of the online discussion centred on Meiyazhagan and Maharaja, particularly in relation to the Best Tamil Film category and major acting honours.

Speaking at a public event, Dhanush acknowledged that stronger films may have been released during the same year. He said he understood the emotions of audiences supporting those titles and respected their disappointment, even as he defended the sincerity and effort behind his own work.

Dhanush Addresses Meiyazhagan and Maharaja Debate

The controversy has frequently been described as a complete rejection of Meiyazhagan and Maharaja, but the official winners list presents a more nuanced picture. Meiyazhagan received a Special Mention for sound mix engineer Suren G, while Sachana Namidass shared the Best Supporting Actress award for Maharaja. The central criticism was therefore about the level and categories of recognition rather than both films being entirely excluded.

Dhanush did not dismiss those comparisons. Instead, he accepted that award decisions can leave deserving films and performances behind. He encouraged audiences to separate their disappointment with the jury’s choices from the work and commitment of the people who received the honours.

The actor also asked fans to recognise the achievement of a Tamil filmmaker and performer receiving two distinctions in the same year. His response combined acceptance of the criticism with a request that the awards not be treated as something he personally controlled.

Dhanush Recalls Films That Missed National Recognition

Dhanush used the occasion to remember several performances from his career that were widely appreciated but did not receive National Film Awards. He referred to films including Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam, Pudhupettai, 3, Mayakkam Enna, Vada Chennai, Karnan, Maryan and Raanjhanaa.

His argument was that awards have never consistently reflected the expectations of audiences or artists. While the present recognition has attracted widespread opposition, he noted that many of his earlier performances passed without the same level of public campaigning in their favour.

Several of those films later earned strong critical reputations and lasting fan followings. By recalling them, Dhanush suggested that the absence of an award does not reduce a film’s artistic value, just as receiving one cannot make every viewer agree with the jury.

Dhanush Says Award Decisions Remain Subjective

Film awards are ultimately based on jury assessments, and differences of opinion are unavoidable. The official results recognise Raayan as Best Tamil Film and Dhanush’s Captain Miller performance through a Special Mention, but audiences remain free to prefer other films or performances.

Dhanush’s response does not end the debate, but it adds balance to the discussion. He accepted that other films may have been stronger, defended the genuine effort behind his work and reminded viewers that several celebrated performances in his career had previously gone unrewarded.

The controversy reflects a larger question surrounding film awards: whether recognition should determine artistic worth. For audiences, Meiyazhagan, Maharaja, Raayan and Captain Miller can continue to be discussed on their individual merits, regardless of how the jury distributed its honours.
