Sridevi’s ₹500 Crore Chennai Property Row Reaches SC
A legal dispute involving a valuable Chennai property associated with late actress Sridevi has reached the Supreme Court, which has reportedly suggested mediation as a possible route to settle the matter. The land, located on East Coast Road, is estimated to be worth around ₹500 crore.
According to Sridevi’s family, the actress purchased approximately five acres of land in 1988 from a businessman identified as Modiliyar. The transaction was reportedly completed with the necessary rights, and the property remained under the family’s control for several decades. A farmhouse was subsequently constructed on the site.
The dispute emerged after Sridevi’s death when the family initiated the process of transferring the property to her husband, Boney Kapoor, and their daughters. During this process, the sons of the seller’s second wife approached the court, claiming that they were entitled to a share in the land.
Claimants challenge decades-old property transaction
The claimants reportedly argued that they were minors when their father sold the property and that the transaction had taken place without their knowledge. They maintained that attaining adulthood allowed them to assert their alleged rights over the land.
The Madras High Court rejected their case, reportedly observing that their mother was alive when the property was sold and had not raised an objection to the transaction at that time. The claimants subsequently approached the Supreme Court to challenge the High Court’s decision.
Sridevi’s family has questioned the basis of the claim, pointing out that it was raised decades after the original purchase. The family reportedly maintains that the actress acquired the land through a valid transaction and remained in possession of it for many years.
Supreme Court recommends mediation in property row
The Supreme Court has not delivered a final ruling on the ownership claims or determined whether the petitioners have an enforceable right over the property. Instead, the court has reportedly encouraged both parties to explore mediation and attempt an amicable settlement.
Mediation could allow the parties to discuss their competing claims outside a prolonged courtroom battle. However, unless an agreement is reached, the legal questions surrounding the decades-old sale and the alleged inheritance rights may still require judicial consideration.
The case has attracted significant attention because of Sridevi’s legacy and the property’s reported ₹500 crore valuation. The dispute will now depend on whether the two sides can reach a settlement through mediation or return to court for further proceedings.
