MM Keeravani will begin work on the background score of Mahesh Babu and SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi in September 2026, with the process expected to continue for five months. The ambitious film, also starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
Varanasi Background Score Work Begins In September
Music composer MM Keeravani is expected to take centre stage in the next crucial phase of SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi, the ambitious action-adventure film led by Mahesh Babu. Keeravani reportedly confirmed during his US tour that he will begin working intensively on the film’s background score in September 2026.
The composer is expected to spend nearly five months completing the score, with the principal music work targeted for completion by January 2027. Further sound mixing, visual-effects coordination and post-production processes are then expected to continue as the makers prepare the film for its worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027.
Varanasi Music Expected To Drive The Epic Experience
Music and sound have traditionally played important roles in Rajamouli’s large-scale films, particularly during action sequences, emotional confrontations and mythological moments. Varanasi is expected to demand an even more detailed musical approach because its narrative reportedly moves across different periods, locations and mythological settings.
The film has been described as a time-travelling action adventure featuring elements inspired by Hindu mythology and the Ramayana. Rajamouli has also spoken about the importance of presenting the film’s immense scale through the IMAX format.
A five-month scoring period indicates that Keeravani may be closely involved in developing separate musical identities for the film’s characters, worlds and major action episodes. The background score will be expected to connect the film’s emotional storytelling with its extensive visual scale rather than functioning only as support for action scenes.
Varanasi Shooting Continues At Ramoji Film City
The Varanasi team has been filming important portions at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. Recent production reports indicated that the film’s major IMAX-scale action sequences had already been completed, while the remaining schedules were focused on dramatic and connecting scenes needed to bring the vast storyline together.
A pivotal Aghora-themed episode was also reportedly filmed on a large Varanasi set created at Ramoji Film City. The extensive production process reflects Rajamouli’s reputation for spending considerable time on action design, performances, visual effects, sound and other technical elements.
The teaser has already offered audiences an early taste of the film’s mythological imagery, visual ambition and powerful soundscape. With Keeravani beginning the detailed score in September, the music department will become increasingly central to the film’s post-production journey.
Varanasi Cast And Release Expectations
Varanasi stars Mahesh Babu alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film marks the first collaboration between Mahesh Babu and Rajamouli, while Keeravani continues his long creative association with the director. KL Narayana is producing the project under the Sri Durga Arts banner.
The film is scheduled to release worldwide on April 7, 2027. The makers are expected to gradually expand the promotional campaign with additional music and footage as production and post-production move forward.
With Keeravani reportedly devoting five months to the background score, Varanasi is shaping up as a film in which sound could be as important as spectacle. The final impact will depend on how effectively the music supports Rajamouli’s combination of action, mythology, emotion and time-spanning adventure.
