Rakul Preet Reveals Why She Chose Shurpanakha In Ramayana

Rakul Preet Singh says Shurpanakha’s complexity and misunderstood journey convinced her to accept the important role in Ramayana: Part 1. Her appearance in the trailer has sparked curiosity about how Nitesh Tiwari’s film will present the character beyond familiar interpretations.

Rakul Preet Reveals What Drew Her To Shurpanakha

Rakul Preet Singh has explained why she agreed to portray Shurpanakha in director Nitesh Tiwari’s highly anticipated Ramayana: Part 1. The actor’s brief but striking appearance in the recently released trailer quickly became a talking point, with viewers curious about how the film would present one of the epic’s most debated characters.

The discussion began after a fan shared an open letter on X and asked Rakul what attracted her to a figure frequently described through only one major incident. Responding to the message, Rakul said it was Shurpanakha’s complexity that convinced her to accept the role.

She explained that the character is often remembered for a single moment even though her story contains several emotional and narrative layers. For Rakul, characters capable of challenging commonly held perceptions offer the most exciting opportunities as a performer. She also expressed hope that audiences would watch Shurpanakha’s journey with an open mind when the film arrives in theatres.

Rakul Preet Hopes To Challenge A Familiar Perception

In the Ramayana tradition, Shurpanakha is Ravana’s sister and plays an important role in moving the central conflict forward. Her encounter with Rama and Lakshmana eventually leads to a chain of events that includes Sita’s abduction and the confrontation between Rama and Ravana.

However, Rakul’s comments suggest that the upcoming film may attempt to explore the person behind those familiar events rather than presenting Shurpanakha only as a conventional antagonist. Her response has increased interest in whether the screenplay will examine the character’s desires, humiliation, anger and place within Ravana’s family.

The actor’s transformation also stood out in the trailer, despite the large number of major characters introduced. Her distinctive appearance and intense expressions prompted viewers to discuss how much narrative importance Shurpanakha may receive in the first instalment.

Ramayana Trailer Builds Buzz Around Its Ensemble Cast

Ramayana: Part 1 features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita and Yash as Ravana. The ensemble also includes Ravie Dubey as Lakshmana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Arun Govil as King Dasharatha, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari and Rakul Preet Singh as Shurpanakha.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the mythological epic is produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. The project is planned as a two-part cinematic adaptation, with Part 1 scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release during Diwali 2026 and Part 2 expected during Diwali 2027.

The trailer’s grand visuals, music, costumes and extensive cast have kept the film at the centre of social-media conversations. Rakul’s explanation has now added another layer to that discussion, positioning Shurpanakha as a character audiences may be encouraged to reconsider rather than judge through a single familiar episode.
