Netflix’s Operation Safed Sagar revisits the 1999 Kargil War and the real Indian Air Force officers whose courage shaped India’s historic high-altitude air campaign.
Operation Safed Sagar Brings Kargil’s Flying Heroes To Screen
Netflix series Operation Safed Sagar: The Untold Story brings viewers closer to the Indian Air Force’s historic role during the 1999 Kargil War, combining aerial combat, military strategy and the personal sacrifices of the officers involved.
Released on August 7, 2026, the six-episode series revolves largely around No. 17 Squadron, popularly known as the Golden Arrows. Directed by Oni Sen and created by Abhijeet Singh Parmar and Kushal Srivastava, the show features Siddharth, Jimmy Shergill, Abhay Verma, Mihir Ahuja, Taaruk Raina and Adil Hussain.
While the series dramatises events for the screen, its central characters draw attention to real IAF personnel who operated under extremely challenging high-altitude conditions during the conflict.
Operation Safed Sagar Heroes Include Ajay Ahuja And BS Dhanoa
Siddharth portrays Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja, who served as Flight Commander of No. 17 Squadron during the Kargil conflict. On May 27, 1999, Ahuja was flying a MiG-21 while searching for a fellow pilot when his aircraft was hit by a surface-to-air missile. He ejected but was later killed after landing across enemy lines. He was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra.
Jimmy Shergill plays Birender Singh “Tony” Dhanoa, who commanded No. 17 Squadron during the conflict. Dhanoa led the Golden Arrows as the unit operated from Srinagar and participated in reconnaissance and strike missions during the war. He was honoured for his service and later rose to become Chief of the Air Staff.
Abhay Verma portrays Flying Officer Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal, known by the call sign “Dhali”. The young pilot undertook demanding night missions during Operation Safed Sagar and was awarded the Vayu Sena Medal. Mihir Ahuja plays Flying Officer CH Bal Reddy, or “Baldy”, another officer associated with the Golden Arrows during the conflict.
Operation Safed Sagar Shows Young Pilots And Strategic Leadership
Taaruk Raina portrays Flight Lieutenant Jitendra “Sangy” Sangwan, part of the younger generation of fighter pilots who faced difficult combat conditions over the mountainous Kargil region. His story reflects the pressure placed on relatively young aviators during one of India’s most demanding air campaigns.
Adil Hussain plays Air Marshal Vinod Patney, who was Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Western Air Command during the conflict. A veteran of earlier India-Pakistan wars, Patney was involved in strategic planning as the IAF adapted its operations to the challenges of high-altitude warfare.
The series also broadens its focus beyond the cockpit. Aanjjan Srivastav portrays then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, while Anant Mahadevan plays External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh, placing the military campaign within the larger political and diplomatic context of 1999.
Operation Safed Sagar Explores War Beyond The Battlefield
The personal cost of the conflict is represented through characters including Alka Ahuja, played by Amrita Bagchi, and Kamalpreet Dhanoa, portrayed by Dia Mirza. These storylines highlight how the consequences of war extended to the families waiting for pilots to return home.
The series also depicts Pakistan’s political and military leadership, with Vinay Pathak portraying Nawaz Sharif and Manu Rishi Chadha playing General Pervez Musharraf. Mark Bennington appears as US President Bill Clinton, reflecting the international diplomatic dimension surrounding the Kargil conflict.
By combining fighter pilots, commanders, political leaders and military families, Operation Safed Sagar: The Untold Story attempts to present a broader account of the conflict while keeping the IAF’s Golden Arrows at its emotional centre.
