Varanasi Eyes 120-Country Release in 50 Languages

Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran, is reportedly being planned for an ambitious international theatrical release across about 120 countries in around 50 languages.

Varanasi Targets A Massive International Rollout

SS Rajamouli’s Varanasi is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious global releases attempted by an Indian film. The upcoming big-screen spectacle, led by Mahesh Babu, is reportedly targeting a theatrical launch in close to 120 countries, a scale that would place it among the widest international rollouts for an Indian production.

The film is scheduled to arrive in theatres worldwide on April 7, 2027. The project has attracted enormous attention because it marks Rajamouli’s next directorial venture after the global success of RRR and also brings Mahesh Babu into a major international-scale action-adventure film.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran play pivotal roles in the project, adding further appeal across Indian and overseas markets. The global strategy is expected to focus on both established Indian-film territories and newer regions where subtitled and dubbed Indian cinema is gaining stronger visibility.

While the proposed scale has generated huge excitement among fans, the final country count, language lineup and theatrical distribution plans will depend on official announcements from the makers and international partners.

Varanasi Plans Dubbing In Around 50 Languages

One of the most striking elements of the reported release strategy is the plan to dub Varanasi in about 50 languages. The list is expected to include Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali, Japanese, Korean, French, Spanish, German and Arabic, alongside other international languages.

For a film designed to reach audiences across cultures, dubbing quality can make a significant difference. A well-executed local-language version does more than translate dialogue; it helps preserve the rhythm, emotion and impact of a performance for viewers who may not be familiar with the original language.

Reports suggest that Rajamouli wants the film’s dubbed editions to retain the emotional weight of the lead actors’ performances rather than relying on generic voice treatment. This approach reflects the growing importance of localisation in the global expansion of Indian cinema.

A wider language strategy could also strengthen the film’s prospects in regions where audiences increasingly watch Indian films in local-language versions. The scale of the dubbed rollout, if confirmed, would make Varanasi a notable test case for how Indian blockbusters can travel beyond traditional overseas markets.

Varanasi May Use Real Voice Artists Instead Of AI

The makers are reportedly planning to use professional human dubbing artists instead of AI-generated voices for Varanasi’s international versions. Around 1,500 voice artists may be considered before the final choices are made for different languages and characters.

The reported decision is important because voice performances often shape how international audiences connect with a film. Choosing artists who can match the mood, personality and emotional journey of a character can help ensure that the dubbed version feels authentic rather than mechanical.

The process is likely to require careful casting, dialogue adaptation and synchronisation across multiple versions. With Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran at the centre of the story, retaining the intensity and nuance of their performances will be a major priority.

Varanasi already carries high expectations due to Rajamouli’s track record of building films with strong visual scale and broad audience appeal. If its reported 50-language and 120-country strategy takes shape as planned, the film could set a new benchmark for the global theatrical reach of Telugu and Indian cinema.
