Bau: Artist at War is based on the true story of Joseph Bau, a Polish-born Jewish graphic artist and Holocaust survivor. During World War II, Bau was imprisoned in the Kraków-Płaszów concentration camp, where he used his skills in art, forgery, and humor to survive and secretly help others escape. While interned, he fell in love with Rebecca, another prisoner, and they were married in a clandestine ceremony in the women’s barracks. After the war, he would become a prominent artist and witness to history. The film interweaves themes of love, courage, memory, and resistance, as Bau must confront his past when asked to testify in a postwar trial of a Nazi officer.
