Jailer Review: Rajini shines, rest fluctuates

Jailer Review: Rajini shines, rest fluctuates
  • 10 Aug 2023 02:33 AM

Superstar Rajinikanth has come up with a new theatrical outing, Jailer which released in theaters on the 10th of August. The film is an action thriller with a comical touch. Let us see what the film has to offer.

Story: Tiger Muthuvel Pandiyan is a soft-natured person but he has a stellar past. He gets enraged after the murder of his son. How does he deal with this adverse situation? Can he track and punish the culprits?

How did the actors perform?

Rajini is obviously the main man of the show and he does deliver a real fine performance. He is an absolute powerhouse and he shoulders the film with his trademark swag and exquisite screen presence. The rest of the cast, featuring Ramyakrishna, Vinayakan, Yogi Babu and others look fine and they deliver good performances.

What about the technical finesse?

The director Nelson Dilipkumar picks a serious plot and gives it his own spin of dark comedy which works to an extent. Anirudh is another hero for this film as he uplifts the whole mood with his splendid background score.

Analysis:

Jailer is a Nelson mark actioner with a comedy touch. The dark comedy is good in parts but it is a mixed bag as there are some dull patches as well, due to this comedy track which isn't conventional;

The opening half starts on a rather slow note with the proceedings pertaining to character establishment taking the center stage. The pace picks up towards the end of the first half as Rajini's fiery presence in the interval block absolutely blasts away.

The interval and the post-interval blocks are of top-tier quality but the portion in between ebbs and flows ever so frequently. The Sunil-Tamannah love track hasn't shaped up the way it was intended to.

Ramyakrishna's character is alright but in all fairness, she could have been utilized in a better manner. The slow start for the first half and the scenes following the interval block are just about alright. Better writing here could have worked very well for the film.

Anirudh's background score is the star of the show and he single-handedly sets the pace for the film for most parts with his impeccable music.

Verdict: Jailer is Rajinikanth's one-man show for most part. He shoulders the film with his exquisite screen presence and portrayal of the passive aggressive character. The film can make for a decent one-time watch this weekend if you watch with minimal expectations.
