Bring Her Back : Latest English Movie Review

Bring Her Back : Latest English Movie Review

Plot
"Bring Her Back" tells the unsettling story of siblings Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong), who are placed in the care of foster mother Laura (Sally Hawkins) after the death of their father. Laura, a former child-care worker who is still grieving the loss of her own daughter, takes the siblings into her home with what initially seems like warm hospitality. However, the film quickly reveals Laura's disturbing behavior, including occult rituals and unsettling interactions with the children. As Andy and Piper navigate the sinister atmosphere, they must confront not only Laura’s strange behavior but also the supernatural forces that seem to haunt their new home.

Overview
Directed by Australian twins Danny and Michael Philippou, "Bring Her Back" is a chilling horror film that blends grief, trauma, and supernatural horror with disturbing psychological elements. Known for their work in the horror-comedy genre, the Philippous' sophomore effort brings a darker, more atmospheric tone to their filmmaking style. The film explores themes of childhood trauma, grief, and the line between the living and the dead, using visual techniques and a foreboding atmosphere to build an ever-increasing sense of menace. The plot carefully weaves in occult elements and disturbing family dynamics to create an unsettling narrative.

Performances
Sally Hawkins delivers a standout performance as Laura, capturing the character’s complex mix of warmth, grief, and sinister tendencies. She effectively portrays a motherly figure whose affectionate nature becomes increasingly unnerving as the film progresses. Billy Barratt’s portrayal of Andy is equally compelling, showing a young man grappling with the trauma of losing his father and the increasingly strange dynamics within the household. Sora Wong as Piper, a visually impaired girl, brings depth to her role, evoking both vulnerability and strength. Jonah Wren Phillips, as the mute and eerie Oliver, adds an unsettling presence to the film, rounding out the cast with a chilling performance.

Technical Aspects
The Philippous' direction exhibits a refined approach to building tension and atmosphere, focusing on subtle, haunting visuals and a slow burn narrative. The film is meticulously crafted, with the setting of Laura’s house playing a central role in conveying a sense of isolation and creeping dread. The use of foggy bathroom mirrors, rainy weather, and ominous imagery creates a sense of dread that permeates the entire film. The pacing of the narrative is deliberate, allowing the suspense to build gradually. The film's structure, while occasionally meandering, effectively draws the audience into the unsettling world it creates.

Music
Cornel Wilczek’s score for "Bring Her Back" is atmospheric and unsettling, perfectly complementing the eerie visuals and tense atmosphere. The music shifts in and out of focus, mirroring the obfuscation of reality and the supernatural elements of the story. It creates an intense mood, heightening the sense of dread and unease that permeates the film. The score enhances the horror elements without overshadowing the subtle nuances of the plot.

Editing
The editing of "Bring Her Back" is deliberate and purposeful, with a slow build that increases the tension as the story progresses. The transitions between moments of mundane normalcy and disturbing occurrences are handled effectively, with editing choices that subtly escalate the discomfort. However, some viewers might find the pacing a bit slow in the middle, where the narrative veers into more psychological horror territory before ramping up again in the latter half.

Positives

  • Strong performances, particularly from Sally Hawkins as the foster mother Laura.

  • A well-crafted atmosphere of tension and menace.

  • The use of occult imagery and psychological horror adds layers of depth to the story.

  • The film's exploration of grief, trauma, and childhood innocence is thought-provoking.

  • Visual flair and effective use of sound contribute to the eerie tone.

Negatives

  • Some viewers may find the slow pacing and gradual build to be too drawn out.

  • The film's occasional lapses in logic and narrative loose ends may frustrate some viewers.

  • The exploration of the supernatural could feel too ambiguous for those looking for a more direct horror story.

  • The film’s focus on unsettling imagery may be too intense for some audiences.

Analysis
"Bring Her Back" is a haunting and atmospheric horror film that effectively blends psychological horror, grief, and supernatural elements. While the narrative occasionally veers into ambiguity, it creates a chilling experience through its visual style, music, and strong performances. The film doesn't rely on traditional horror tropes but instead focuses on building a pervasive sense of dread and unease. The characters' emotional arcs, particularly the trauma and grief they face, are explored in a way that adds emotional weight to the horror. However, the film's slow pacing and abstract narrative may not appeal to all viewers.

Bottomline: Chilling Atmosphere

Rating: 3.5/5
