The Girlfriend : Latest Pan India Movie Review

Plot

Bhooma Devi (Rashmika Mandanna) joins Ramalingaiah Arts & Science College in Hyderabad to pursue a Master’s in Literature with dreams of becoming an author. Vicky (Dheekshith Shetty), a Master’s student in Computer Science, develops an obsessive affection for her. Manipulating her emotionally, he gaslights Bhooma into falling for him. The film traces how their relationship evolves, how Bhooma copes with Vicky’s possessiveness, and how Durga (Anu Emmanuel) ties into their lives.

Overview

After a successful debut (Chi La Sow) and a flop (Manmadhudu 2), Rahul Ravindran returns with The Girlfriend — a romantic drama centered on gaslighting, emotional manipulation, and self-realization. Rashmika shoulders the film with emotional intensity, while Hesham Abdul Wahab’s music adds soul. Despite its strong message, the film suffers from uneven pacing and overly didactic writing.

Performances

  • Rashmika Mandanna delivers her career-best performance. Her portrayal of Bhooma transitions seamlessly from innocence to anger, with standout moments in the Hi Nanna scene and the emotional shower sequence.
  • Dheekshith Shetty impresses as the narcissistic lover, though his acting feels exaggerated in a few scenes.
  • Anu Emmanuel gets a meaty supporting role and delivers a sincere performance.
  • Rohini Molleti shines even with minimal screen time, emoting powerfully with her eyes.
  • Rao Ramesh and Rahul Ravindran (in a cameo as a professor) are decent, though Rao’s character feels underdeveloped.

Technical Aspects

  • Direction & Writing: Rahul Ravindran brings depth to the subject of gaslighting, portraying it with raw emotion and realism. However, his narrative leans heavily towards female perspectives, occasionally alienating other viewpoints.
  • Cinematography: Krishnan Vasant’s work, especially in the mirror and shower sequences, is visually gripping and symbolic.
  • Editing: Chota K. Prasad’s editing could have been crisper. The first half drags slightly, affecting the film’s rhythm.
  • Production: Geetha Arts and Dheeraj Mogilineni Entertainments deserve credit for backing a film on such a sensitive topic.

Music

Hesham Abdul Wahab delivers yet another soothing and soulful soundtrack. His songs blend organically into the storytelling, elevating emotional moments and complementing Rashmika’s performance beautifully.

Positives

  1. Rashmika Mandanna’s exceptional performance
  2. Five brilliantly directed emotional sequences
  3. Impactful and thought-provoking dialogues
  4. Rohini’s brief yet powerful act
  5. Soul-stirring music and sound design

Negatives

  1. Slow and leisurely pacing, especially in the first half
  2. Underwritten Rao Ramesh character
  3. One-dimensional male characterization

Analysis

The Girlfriend succeeds as a commentary on emotional abuse and modern relationships. The HOD scene, where a father confronts his daughter’s choices, sets the tone for the film’s unapologetic stance on autonomy and consent. Rahul Ravindran bravely explores the psychology of gaslighting how upbringing and possessiveness intertwine to create toxic relationships.

However, the film’s intent sometimes overshadows its storytelling. By portraying all male characters, except one, as morally flawed, it risks oversimplifying gender dynamics. Yet, the writing of Vicky’s narcissism and Bhooma’s emotional journey remains engaging and realistic. The dialogues, particularly “Nenu kavalanukunte padutavu. Padela chesthanu,” are sharp and reflective of manipulative relationships. Women are likely to find parts of Bhooma’s journey deeply relatable, especially the climactic outburst, which resonates as a statement of strength and self-respect.

Bottomline: Hard Hitting
