Tourist Bus Crash Near Buffalo Kills 5 Indians, Multiple Injured On New York Highway

A tourist bus carrying 54 passengers, including several Indian nationals, crashed Friday evening on a highway near Pembroke, about 25 miles east of Buffalo, New York. Authorities confirmed that five people were killed while many others sustained injuries, some of whom required immediate air evacuation. The passengers, who were of Indian, Chinese, and Filipino origin, were returning to New York City after a day trip to Niagara Falls, one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations.

According to New York State Police commander Major Andre Ray, the driver lost control after being distracted and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to veer off the highway. While mechanical failure and driver intoxication were both ruled out, investigators believe distraction was the primary cause. Despite the severity of the crash, officials confirmed that no children were killed and that most passengers with minor injuries received medical treatment and were released shortly afterward.

Rescue Efforts And Official Responses

Emergency services launched a large-scale rescue operation involving multiple ambulances and eight medical helicopters from nonprofit air ambulance provider Mercy Flight. Translators were also deployed to assist injured tourists who faced language barriers in communicating with doctors and officials. The bus driver survived and is cooperating with the investigation, with police stating they have a strong understanding of what led to the accident.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences and assured that her office is coordinating with local authorities to ensure medical support and rescue operations. US Senator Chuck Schumer described the incident as heartbreaking, thanking first responders for their swift action. In the aftermath, blood and organ donor network Connect Life issued an urgent call for blood donations to support the victims.

The accident has cast a shadow over what was supposed to be a joyful day trip to Niagara Falls. As investigations continue, families of the victims and survivors are left grappling with shock and grief. The tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the importance of road safety, especially when transporting large groups of international tourists across long distances in unfamiliar terrain.
