In a significant move ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended Ajit Agarkar’s contract as the chief selector until June 2026. This decision solidifies Agarkar's position as one of the key figures behind India's recent cricketing success. The extension of his contract was confirmed after discussions about his future role, with the BCCI showing confidence in his leadership. Under Agarkar’s tenure, the Indian cricket team achieved major victories, including winning the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025.
The extension comes before the highly anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, and Agarkar had reportedly accepted the offer a few months back. A senior BCCI official confirmed the renewal, saying, "Under his tenure, the Indian team had won titles and had seen transition (of the Tests and T20) too. The BCCI had extended his contract till June 2026 and he had accepted the offer a few months back."
One of Agarkar’s significant contributions has been his approach to managing star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, particularly regarding his workload and injury management. In recent statements, Agarkar clarified that the team is committed to Bumrah's long-term fitness, especially for marquee events like World Cups and the Champions Trophy. He explained, "Most fast bowlers are monitored, and yes, because he's picked up an injury over the last two or three years, there's extra care taken on how unique and how special he is."
Bumrah's fitness and availability for major tournaments have been a priority for the selection team. Agarkar further emphasized that the team management, along with the medical staff, constantly monitors Bumrah’s workload and health, aiming to ensure his presence for high-profile games. "We want him available for all the big games," Agarkar stressed, recognizing Bumrah’s importance for India in events like the World Cup and major bilateral series.
As the Asia Cup 2025 approaches, Agarkar's leadership in the selection process will continue to play a crucial role. India’s campaign begins on September 10, 2025, with a match against the UAE, followed by a high-voltage game against Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai. India’s final group-stage match will take place against Oman on September 19 in Abu Dhabi.
Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector remains integral to India’s plans for future international cricket tournaments, and his role will continue to be closely watched by cricket fans and experts alike. The renewal of his contract serves as an endorsement of his work and a sign of confidence in his abilities to steer India to further success on the international stage.
