Explosion near Islamabad court injures several amid vehicle blast

On Tuesday afternoon in Pakistan’s capital, a powerful blast rocked the premises of the district judicial complex in Islamabad, injuring multiple individuals and triggering a swift response from law-enforcement and bomb-disposal teams. According to police officials and local sources, the explosion occurred in one or more vehicles parked within the premises of the District Judicial Complex Islamabad, prompting an immediate cordon of the surrounding area and activation of emergency services.

The initial assessment by authorities indicates that the blast took place in the parking lot of the complex, where vehicles awaiting hearings and court-business are normally stationed. Witnesses and local media reports said the shock of the explosion was audible from a distance, reaching as far as the nearby Police Lines headquarters and causing considerable alarm among court visitors, staff and passers-by.

According to a spokesperson of the city police, at least six people were confirmed to have been injured and are being treated at the nearby Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad. The injured are believed to include court employees, visitors and bystanders at the time of the incident. Vehicular damage was also reported.

Security officials have sealed off the area for investigation. Bomb disposal squads and forensic teams are examining the wreckage to determine whether the explosion was caused by an improvised device, a gas cylinder malfunction, or a mechanical fault in the vehicle. No group has claimed responsibility, and the exact motive remains under scrutiny.

The complex is located in the G-11 sector of the city, a precinct that houses several key judicial offices and sees heavy footfall daily. Following the explosion, traffic in the immediate vicinity was halted, and vehicular entry into the court facility was suspended pending clearance from security authorities. Court proceedings have been temporarily disrupted as officials assess the damage and ensure that the site is secured.

Law-enforcement officials emphasised that while the investigation is at an early stage, the priority remains to secure the site, aid the injured, and ascertain whether the incident was deliberate. “The area has been cordoned off,” one senior police official said, “and the bomb disposal crew is combing the wreckage for evidence of an explosive device.”

The blast comes amid heightened security alerts across the region, although authorities have not yet linked the incident to any specific militant or criminal organisation. In parallel, the Pakistan capital has seen several prior security breaches targeting judicial and governmental premises, making the response to this incident particularly focused on prevention of escalation.

Clinicians at PIMS reported that the patients admitted had varying degrees of injuries, including blast-related trauma and shrapnel wounds. Hospital officials said that a full list of casualties was not yet finalised, and treatment was ongoing. Emergency vehicles and ambulances were seen converging on the site shortly after the explosion, indicating the urgency of the response.

Local residents described a scene of confusion and fear immediately after the explosion. Many people evacuated court buildings and surrounding offices once the initial blast was heard, and the parking lot was quickly cleared by security personnel. Visuals shared on social media showed columns of smoke rising from the compound. Authorities urged calm and asked the public to avoid speculating until a formal statement has been issued. DAWN+1

In a broader context, the incident attracted attention because it occurred within 24 hours of another vehicle explosion in India’s capital city, underscoring regional concerns over cross-border security threats and judicial facility targeting. While Pakistani and Indian officials have not directly linked the two events, intelligence agencies in both countries are reported to be conducting parallel assessments.

As investigations continue, the Islamabad Capital Territory Police and the Counter-Terrorism Department are expected to hold a joint briefing later in the evening to update on the motives, suspects and security implications of the explosion. Court administrations have announced that proceedings at the judicial complex will resume only after full security clearance and structural assessments are completed.

The incident reinforces the persistent vulnerabilities of judicial infrastructure and vehicular zones adjacent to high-traffic government facilities. Analysts note that parking areas and ancillary premises have often been weak links in security planning, and this explosion may prompt reviews of perimeter protection, vehicular screening and emergency-response readiness across major judicial centres.

Authorities have appealed to any witnesses at the scene to come forward with CCTV footage or mobile recordings, and have urged that anyone with information about suspicious vehicles or timed blasts contact the Islamabad Police immediately. Meanwhile, for the relatives of the injured and persons scheduled at the court, alternative arrangements for hearings are currently being arranged. The judicial complex is expected to remain under heightened security for the near future as the probe progresses.
