OpenAI Smart Speaker Report Reveals Screenless AI Device
OpenAI is reportedly preparing to enter the consumer hardware market with a portable, screenless AI speaker designed to bring ChatGPT into the home. According to the report, the device could serve as a more conversational and proactive alternative to traditional smart speakers from Amazon, Google and Apple. OpenAI has not publicly confirmed the product’s final design, features, price or release schedule.
Portable Screenless AI Speaker
The reported OpenAI smart speaker is expected to use a compact form factor that can be moved between rooms instead of remaining connected to a power outlet. A rechargeable battery could make it suitable for use throughout the home, while the absence of a display may keep the focus on voice interaction. The report also suggests that the device may include a camera, microphones and environmental sensors. Mechanical components could allow parts of the speaker to move, creating a more expressive and lifelike presence during conversations.
Humanlike ChatGPT Companion
OpenAI is said to be developing the speaker as a humanlike AI companion rather than a basic voice assistant. OpenAI officially announced that the io Products team, founded by Jony Ive and other former Apple designers, merged with the company in July 2025. Jony Ive and his design studio, LoveFrom, also assumed major design and creative responsibilities across OpenAI. The company separately describes its Consumer Products team as developing next-generation AI devices that combine hardware engineering, design and advanced artificial intelligence.
The report claims that OpenAI could unveil its first in-house speaker during 2026 and release it commercially in 2027. OpenAI has not announced an official launch date, product name or price. If introduced, the smart speaker would represent a major expansion beyond software and place the company in more direct competition with established smart-home platforms operated by Apple, Amazon and Google.
