Trump deploys National Guard and takes control of DC Police
President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of the National Guard to patrol the streets of Washington, D.C., while taking emergency control of the city’s police force. During a Monday morning announcement, he confirmed he is invoking Section 740 of the Home Rule Act, a provision allowing the president to assume authority over the Metropolitan Police Department for a period of up to 48 hours. In that time, changes to the department’s leadership are expected.

Trump stated that the decision comes in response to what he described as an unacceptably high crime rate in the nation’s capital compared to other major world capitals. However, no independent data to substantiate this comparison has been presented. Pam Bondi, the U.S. attorney general, will serve as interim commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Department during the federal control period.

The National Guard has already been stationed across the city, and the defense secretary has indicated readiness to bring in additional military resources if required. Federal agencies have begun clearing homeless encampments from public streets, reflecting Trump’s push for stricter public safety and urban cleanliness measures.

His threats to assume control of the District date back to before his presidency, but they have intensified in recent weeks. The immediate catalyst appears to have been an incident involving the alleged attack of a federal staff member during a carjacking. Trump warned afterward that if local officials did not act, he would move forward with federalizing the city’s police. Late last week, he announced that his plan would take effect at midnight Friday, placing multiple federal agencies on patrol throughout the city.

Despite Trump’s warnings, official police statistics indicate significant declines in crime over the past year. Violent crime has dropped by 26 percent compared to the same period last year, overall crime is down 7 percent, and homicides have fallen 12 percent. These figures continue a trend from 2024, when violent crime fell 35 percent from the previous year.

The last deployment of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., was during the events of January 6, 2021. Before that, the Guard was mobilized in 2020 in response to widespread protests. Earlier this year, Trump also sent the National Guard to California to address protests against immigration enforcement operations.

The president has signaled that the strategy used in the nation’s capital could extend to other U.S. cities facing public safety challenges, specifically mentioning Chicago. He has positioned the move as a necessary intervention to restore order and security where he believes local leadership has failed.

The coming days will reveal whether temporary federal control of the Metropolitan Police Department will lead to measurable changes in crime or security. The decision also raises ongoing questions about the limits of federal power in a city that operates under a unique governance framework established by the Home Rule Act..
