With festivities set to draw thousands to downtown Austin—especially to the bustling 6th Street entertainment district—officers are stepping up their presence and offering safety reminders for both trick-or-treaters and partygoers.
A press conference will be held at noon at APD headquarters, where Commander Carey Chaudoir and Corporal Jose Mendez are scheduled to address the media. The department will outline precautionary measures, announce temporary street closures, and provide key safety recommendations for those celebrating Halloween throughout Austin.
According to police officials, the goal is to balance community enjoyment with safety and order, particularly as the holiday coincides with large crowds, late-night events, and increased pedestrian traffic downtown. Commander Chaudoir emphasized that while Halloween is a time for fun and creativity, vigilance remains crucial. “We want families, children, and visitors to celebrate responsibly and return home safely,” he said.
The department is advising parents to accompany children during trick-or-treating, ensure costumes are visible to drivers, and encourage the use of crosswalks and sidewalks in residential neighborhoods. Reflective clothing, flashlights, and group walking are among the recommended precautions to minimize risks in dimly lit areas.
