Owners of Apple devices have less than two months remaining to file a claim in a $95 million class action settlement related to allegations that the Siri voice assistant was unintentionally recording users’ private conversations. The lawsuit, which spanned five years, accused Apple of violating consumer privacy through unintentional Siri activations that allegedly led to the capture of sensitive, personal communications.

The legal action covers users who owned or purchased Siri-enabled Apple products between September 17, 2014, and December 31, 2024. Devices included in the settlement are iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBooks, iMacs, HomePods, iPod touches, and Apple TVs. Claimants must demonstrate that their device may have experienced unintended Siri activation during a confidential conversation to be eligible for compensation.

The class action settlement establishes a compensation structure that could pay eligible claimants up to $20 per Siri-enabled device. However, the actual payout amount will be determined based on the number of valid claims submitted and the quantity of devices claimed by participants. With $95 million set aside in the settlement fund, those who act before the July 2 deadline could receive a meaningful share, depending on the total number of approved claims.

Consumers were notified of their eligibility either by email or regular mail. Each notification included a unique Claim Identification Code and Confirmation Code, which streamline the claim submission process. However, receiving a code is not a prerequisite for participating. Individuals who believe they are eligible but did not receive formal notification can still file a claim online.

While Apple has agreed to this settlement, the company does not admit any wrongdoing or liability regarding the allegations. The resolution is intended to avoid further litigation and legal expenses, and to bring closure to the privacy concerns raised. A final court hearing to approve the settlement is scheduled for August 1, at which point a judge will determine whether the agreement is fair and reasonable.

Those who do not wish to participate in the settlement have the option to object to its terms or to opt out entirely. Individuals who opt out will forgo their right to compensation but retain the ability to pursue their own legal actions. On the other hand, individuals who neither file a claim nor opt out will be bound by the terms of the settlement and waive certain rights to sue in the future.

The lawsuit highlighted the growing public concern about how voice-activated technologies interact with user privacy. Siri, like other virtual assistants, is designed to respond only when it hears a wake word, but multiple reports have shown that background noise or similar-sounding words can cause unintended activations. In those cases, devices might record and send data to servers for processing, sometimes including snippets of private conversation.

This settlement draws attention to the balance between technological convenience and privacy risks. Voice-controlled devices have become nearly ubiquitous in households and offices, but users are increasingly questioning how their data is collected, stored, and used. Though companies often state that recorded audio is anonymized or used to improve services, this case demonstrates the potential for users to seek accountability and redress when boundaries are perceived to have been crossed.

The window for filing claims is closing fast, and eligible users are advised to act soon if they wish to be included in the payout. The claim process is straightforward and can be completed through the dedicated settlement website. Proof of ownership or device usage during the covered period may be required, and claimants are encouraged to retain any relevant documents until the case is fully resolved.

As the final hearing date approaches, this case serves as a reminder that digital privacy continues to be a critical concern in a world increasingly reliant on smart technology. The Siri lawsuit and resulting settlement underscore the importance of transparency and user control, particularly when it comes to the collection of voice data through everyday devices.
