Lal Darwaza Bonalu 2025: Devotees Flock as Minister Bhatti Offers Prayers, Silk Garments to Goddess
The historic lanes of Hyderabad's Old City were immersed in faith and festivity as the Bonalu celebrations at Lal Darwaza reached their vibrant peak on Sunday. Thousands of devotees, especially women dressed in traditional finery, gathered at the revered Sri Simhavahini Mahankali temple to offer Bonam to the goddess. The rhythmic beats of dappu drums echoed across the area, transforming the neighborhood into a scene of spiritual energy and cultural pride.
In anticipation of massive footfall, temple authorities implemented special lanes to manage the crowds. Over 2,500 security personnel including the Rapid Action Force (RAF), Railway Police Force (RPF), and special branch units were deployed to maintain order. Liquor outlets were closed for the day, and CCTV cameras monitored activity at all major access points.
Surrounding localities such as Hari Bowli, Sultan Shahi, Bela, and Sabzi Mandi were lit with colorful LED decorations, adding grandeur to the religious festivities. Bonalu, celebrated in the Telugu month of Ashada Masam, will conclude with traditional rituals like ‘Rangam’ (oracle prediction) and ‘Ghatam’ processions, which will pass through Charminar and end at the Musi River.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who attended the event, emphasized the importance of Bonalu to Telangana’s cultural heritage. “This festival, rooted in deep devotion, begins at Golconda Fort, continues in Secunderabad, and reaches its spiritual crescendo at Lal Darwaza’s Simhavahini Mahankali temple,” he said.
On behalf of the state government, Bhatti offered pattu vastralu (silk garments) to the deity and prayed for the prosperity and well-being of all citizens. He announced that ₹1,290 crore had been allocated from the Common Good Fund for temple development across Telangana, with ₹20 crore specifically directed toward Bonalu celebrations in Greater Hyderabad.
He further reassured citizens of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s dedication to the development of religious and cultural landmarks, especially around the iconic Mahankali temple. Ministers D Sridhar Babu and Ponnam Prabhakar also participated in the rituals, offering their respects and joining devotees in prayer. With community spirit, religious fervor, and government support in perfect sync, Lal Darwaza’s Bonalu festivities remain a powerful symbol of Telangana’s living cultural legacy.
