All three Illinois schools to make the top 100 are located in Chicago, underscoring the city’s strong track record of delivering high-quality public education. Payton College Preparatory High School led the state by ranking No. 32 nationally, followed by Northside College Preparatory High School at No. 40. Lane Technical High School rounded out the group at No. 72. These schools are widely recognized for rigorous academics, selective admissions, and strong college preparation programs that place students on competitive paths after graduation.
Outside of Chicago, Illinois schools were also recognized for excellence, though not in the top 100. Aurora’s Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy ranked No. 120 and continues to stand out as a premier STEM-focused institution, attracting students with advanced interests in science, mathematics, and technology. The University of Illinois High School in Urbana was placed at No. 124, while Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire earned the No. 203 spot. Hinsdale Central High School ranked No. 302, and Hancock College Preparatory High School in Chicago followed at No. 314.
The Midwest as a whole performed strongly in the rankings, with Signature School in Evansville, Indiana securing the No. 2 position nationally. This highlights how the region continues to produce nationally competitive public schools that combine academic strength with innovative approaches to education.
For Illinois, the success of Payton, Northside, and Lane Tech is often attributed to their selective enrollment structures, strong teaching staff, and comprehensive academic programs that emphasize advanced placement courses, extracurricular opportunities, and extensive college counseling. These schools consistently send graduates to highly ranked universities, which reinforces their reputation as some of the strongest public institutions in the country.
At the same time, suburban schools such as Stevenson and Hinsdale Central maintain strong reputations for academic achievement and student success. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy remains unique as a statewide residential school dedicated to developing future scientists and engineers, further broadening the profile of Illinois education on the national stage.
These rankings matter not only as recognition but also as a tool for families and policymakers. They provide valuable insight into where educational excellence is flourishing and where further support is needed. For parents and students, the rankings can serve as a guide in choosing schools that align with long-term academic and career goals. For communities, the results highlight areas of strength while also reinforcing the importance of investment in public education across the state.
Illinois schools have consistently shown that high achievement is possible in both urban and suburban settings. The recognition of Chicago’s selective enrollment schools alongside suburban institutions demonstrates the diversity of strong educational options across the state. As Illinois continues to focus on education policy and investment, the achievements of these schools serve as both a point of pride and a model for how other districts can raise performance and prepare students for the future.
