India’s wealth has always been closely tied to family-run businesses, many of which span across generations. The latest Hurun India Rich List 2025 has revealed fascinating insights into which surnames dominate the country’s wealthiest business dynasties. According to the report, Agarwal and Gupta families lead the pack, with 12 families each making it to the list of India’s richest. This reflects how certain surnames continue to hold influence over India’s economic landscape.
Generational Wealth Patterns
The third most represented surname in the rankings is Patel, with 10 families, while Jain comes in next with nine families. Following them are Mehta, Goenka, and Shah, each with five families securing a place in the list. Further down, Singh, Rao, and Doshi are represented by four families each. Together, these surnames not only showcase wealth accumulation but also highlight how certain communities have excelled in preserving and expanding businesses through generations.
Wealth advisor Sarthak Ahuja observed that such data provides a deeper understanding of the communities driving India’s business growth. “Do you know which surname is the most common in India’s list of richest families? The Hurun India Rich List for 2025 did an analysis of the most commonly occurring surnames in India's richest family businesses,” he said.
For entrepreneurs, investors, and professionals working with ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNIs), this report offers more than just trivia. It reflects how community-driven entrepreneurship, legacy planning, and strong family networks have been the backbone of wealth creation in India. Families carrying these surnames are not just names on a list but symbols of generational business continuity, resilience, and influence in sectors ranging from manufacturing to finance.
As Ahuja noted, “Such insights are valuable for anyone building in wealth and catering to UHNIs.” The Hurun India Rich List 2025 therefore sheds light not only on the country’s wealthiest families but also on the communities that have historically shaped India’s business elite.
