Several animals were killed and two people were displaced after a structure fire broke out in Prospect Park, New Jersey, on Friday morning. Fire officials confirmed that the blaze, which originated in the rear section of a two-story home on Fairview Avenue, caused significant damage before being brought under control.
According to Prospect Park Fire Chief Doug Struyk, firefighters were dispatched shortly before 9 a.m. to the residence located between North 16th and North 17th streets after reports of heavy smoke and flames. The fire spread rapidly through the upper level of the structure before being contained by crews from multiple neighboring departments. The coordinated response included assistance from fire departments in Wayne, Totowa, Haledon, Paterson, West Paterson, and Midland Park.
Chief Struyk stated that while no human injuries or fatalities were reported, several animals inside the home did not survive the fire. He described the loss as tragic, emphasizing that responders made every effort to reach the pets as soon as conditions allowed. The fire department did not specify the number or type of animals lost but confirmed that the incident had a devastating emotional impact on the displaced residents.
By the time firefighters fully extinguished the flames, the home had sustained heavy damage to the second floor, particularly near the back portion where the blaze is believed to have started. Neighbors in the area reported seeing thick black smoke rising from behind the house earlier in the morning.
