New $250 Bill Proposal Raises Debate Over Trump Image

Proposal Raises Currency Debate

President Donald Trump could appear on a proposed new $250 bill if Congress approves legislation that would change current restrictions on US currency. The proposal has drawn attention because federal law currently bars living people from appearing on American paper money. If approved, the measure would allow Trump to be featured on a commemorative bill connected to the 250th anniversary of US independence on July 4, 2026.

Treasury Says Law Will Guide Process

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that proposed legislation is before both the House and Senate to change the requirement and allow a living person, Donald J. Trump, to appear on the $250 bill. Bessent said he did not see anything improper about featuring the sitting president on an anniversary bill, but added that the Treasury would follow the law. The proposed design reportedly includes the phrase “America 250 anniversary,” linking the bill to the country’s semiquincentennial celebrations.

Legal And Political Questions Continue

Treasury officials have begun preliminary planning in case lawmakers approve the proposal, but officials have said no printing would take place without congressional authorization. Reports said some employees at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing raised legal concerns because current rules do not permit living presidents on US money. A Treasury spokeswoman said the bureau is conducting appropriate planning and due diligence in response to the proposal.

The proposed bill has also become part of a wider political debate over Trump’s image being used in federal and commemorative projects. Related anniversary branding and proposed commemorative items have already drawn scrutiny from critics, while supporters argue that the 250th anniversary is an appropriate moment for a special currency design. The legislation allowing Trump to appear on the $250 bill was introduced in Congress last year but has not advanced. Democrats have sharply criticized the idea, with Senator Mark Warner calling it an effort to boost the president’s image. For now, the proposal remains dependent on congressional action, legal review and Treasury procedures before any final design or production decision can move forward.
