Kerala Assembly walkout by LDF over liquor tax reduction row

LDF protests inside Kerala Assembly

The opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) created a ruckus in the Kerala Legislative Assembly on Tuesday after the Speaker denied permission for an adjournment motion related to the government’s decision to reduce tax on low-alcohol-content beverages. The protest escalated into slogans and a walkout after opposition members expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling.

According to proceedings, LDF MLAs entered the well of the House accusing the government of favouring private liquor companies through the revised tax structure. The Speaker rejected the notice, stating that budget discussions were already in progress and such issues could be raised during the allotted debate time.

Allegations over liquor tax reduction

The controversy centres around the government’s decision to reduce tax on certain low-alcohol beverages. Opposition leaders alleged that the move could benefit private players in the liquor industry and potentially increase the availability of such drinks in the state.

They argued that easing taxes on these products may lead to higher consumption, especially among younger sections of society, and demanded a detailed discussion on the policy rationale behind the decision. Government representatives, however, maintained that the tax revision was part of broader fiscal and excise policy adjustments.

Speaker denies adjournment motion

The Speaker ruled out immediate discussion on the issue, stating that procedural norms during budget sessions limit the admission of certain notices. The ruling also cited earlier precedents where similar motions were not admitted during financial discussions in the House.

Following the denial, opposition members protested inside the Assembly and later staged a walkout. The protest included allegations that the tax change was designed to favour specific commercial interests, which the government side did not formally respond to during the session.

Political tension escalates in House

The walkout added to the ongoing political tension in the Kerala Assembly, with both ruling and opposition benches exchanging sharp criticism over procedural conduct and policy intent. Opposition leaders later maintained that they would continue to raise the issue in upcoming sessions. The incident reflects continuing friction between the state government and opposition parties over excise policy, taxation decisions and regulatory oversight of the liquor sector in Kerala.
