Darline Graham Nordone, the younger sister of late South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, has been appointed to complete the remaining months of his Senate term. Governor Henry McMaster presented the decision as a tribute to Graham while the state prepares to choose a permanent successor.
Darline Graham Nordone appointed to Senate seat
McMaster announced Nordone’s appointment at a press conference on Monday, July 13, following Graham’s unexpected death over the weekend. The governor said asking Graham’s younger sister to finish his work was an appropriate way to recognize the senator’s long record of public service.
Nordone will temporarily represent South Carolina through the end of the current Senate term in January 2027. Her selection fills the immediate vacancy without giving one of the active Republican candidates the political advantage of entering the upcoming election as an appointed incumbent.
President Donald Trump publicly supported Nordone’s appointment, as did Senate Majority Leader John Thune and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott. The backing reflected both her close relationship with Graham and the desire among Republican leaders to honor his legacy during the transition.
Nordone promises to continue her brother’s work
Accepting the appointment, Nordone said she would work during the coming months to advance issues important to her brother and South Carolina. She pledged to support the president and continue Graham’s efforts on behalf of the state and the country.
Nordone has not previously held elected office and is not expected to seek a full Senate term. Her public-service experience includes work related to disability services and a role with the South Carolina Commission for the Blind. She remained a regular presence throughout Graham’s political career, appearing at campaign events and ceremonial occasions.
Close sibling bond shaped their lives
The appointment carries deep personal significance because Graham helped raise Nordone after their parents died within 15 months of each other. Graham was 22 and beginning law school when he became the legal guardian of his 13-year-old sister.
Their relationship remained central to Graham’s public story. Nordone often described him as a brother and parental figure, while Graham regularly spoke about the responsibility of caring for her as one of the experiences that shaped his character and political outlook. She also introduced him during the launch of his presidential campaign in 2015.
Republican primary set for August
Nordone’s temporary appointment clears the way for a competitive Republican primary scheduled for August 11. The eventual Republican nominee is expected to face the Democratic candidate in the November election for the next full Senate term.
Several prominent Republicans have been discussed as possible contenders, making the contest one of South Carolina’s most closely watched political races. Nordone’s decision not to seek the seat permanently allows voters and party members to choose Graham’s long-term successor without the interim senator entering the campaign with the advantages of incumbency.
Her appointment preserves continuity for South Carolina in Washington while serving as a personal tribute to a senator who represented the state for more than two decades.
