Boxer Gaurav Bidhuri Slams Shahid Afridi Over Pahalgam Attack Remarks, Defends Indian Army

Indian boxer and World Championship bronze medallist Gaurav Bidhuri has strongly responded to former Pakistani cricket captain Shahid Afridi following his controversial remarks on the recent Pahalgam terrorist attack, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. Afridi’s comments, made during a television interview in Pakistan, questioned the efficiency of India’s security forces in Kashmir, sparking widespread outrage among Indians. Bidhuri's bold counterattack, defending India's armed forces and its global sporting presence, has since gone viral. The Pahalgam attack, carried out by the Pakistan-based proxy outfit The Resistance Front, has drawn widespread international condemnation. The incident marks one of the deadliest terror attacks in Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama bombing. While India has blamed Pakistan-backed groups for the violence, Afridi appeared on Pakistani media questioning the capabilities of Indian security forces.

Afridi remarked on Samaa TV, “Tum logon ki 8 lakh hi fauj hai Kashmir mein aur yeh ho gaya. Iska matlab nalayak ho, nikamme ho na tum log security de nahi sake logon ko,” essentially calling India’s military forces inefficient for failing to prevent the attack. Bidhuri, in a scathing rebuttal, stated, “The entire country is still in shock over the attacks in Pahalgam and the steps taken by the Indian government have driven Pakistanis crazy. The interview by Shahid Afridi in which he talked about how eight lakh Indian soldiers could not do anything to stop the attack, I would like to remind you that in 1971, 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered to our army, so please don't try to teach us about capability.”

He also addressed the issue of “demanding proof” from India, emphasizing Pakistan’s long-standing involvement in sheltering terror outfits. “The entire world knows that Pakistan is supporting terrorist organizations. The Resistance Front, a proxy of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, has already claimed responsibility,” Bidhuri stated. Switching to Afridi’s attempt to leverage sports diplomacy, Bidhuri pointed out the irony in the cricketer’s statements. “You were talking about sports diplomacy, so I would like to remind you how Neeraj Chopra invited your Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem. Don’t preach to us about sportsmanship.”

In a particularly stinging comparison, he contrasted the global appeal of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Pakistan Super League (PSL). “You have your PSL; we have IPL. Please look where the world is playing. You said you received threats in India—realize the world is coming here to play while no one is coming there.” Bidhuri concluded by stating, “You've obviously gone crazy, but the world knows what Pakistan is.” His statement encapsulated the sentiments of many Indians angered by Afridi’s remarks.

This incident is yet another flashpoint in the already tense relationship between India and Pakistan, especially in the aftermath of terror incidents that are routinely traced back to Pakistan-based groups. While Afridi's comments were likely aimed at garnering domestic support, they have backfired internationally and especially in India, where public sentiment is strongly in favor of the armed forces. The Indian sports community has often played a unifying role, but in this case, Gaurav Bidhuri’s remarks underscore the firm stance taken by athletes in defense of national honor, both on and off the field. As tensions between the two countries escalate again over cross-border terror and diplomatic relations remain strained, voices like Bidhuri’s serve as powerful reminders of how sports personalities, too, play a vital role in shaping public opinion and defending national integrity.
