Ricky Ponting, head coach of Punjab Kings, left team co-owner Preity Zinta speechless with a candid response during their conversation at the end of IPL 2025. Despite Punjab Kings falling short in the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Ponting was widely praised for leading the team to a historic season. In a relaxed sit-down with Zinta, the Bollywood actress and cricket franchise co-owner posed a question that fans have often wondered: how does a fiery competitor like Ponting remain so calm during intense matches?
Zinta asked, "How does somebody be so aggressive on the ground and as a person, but be so calm and chilled out?" Ponting quickly replied, "You need to come and sit next to me in the dugout sometimes, because you will see that it's not always calm." He clarified that while his demeanor off the field might seem composed, once the game starts, his competitive spirit is very much alive.
Ponting elaborated on his coaching mindset, emphasizing his dedication to high performance. “When it’s cricket time, it’s my job to bring high performance to this team. I’m not going to waste a minute, a day, or a training session where I’m not trying to be the best coach and help every single player be their best,” he said.
The conversation offered fans a rare glimpse into the intense focus Ponting brings to the role of mentor, even while managing the expectations of team owners and supporters. His blend of intensity and professionalism is clearly a cornerstone of Punjab Kings' resurgence in the league.
