England star Jos Buttler has praised Shubman Gill’s leadership qualities, saying the young Indian cricketer is poised to be a perfect combination of former Test captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Gill has been handed the reins of India’s Test team following Rohit’s retirement and will lead the side in the high-stakes five-match series against England starting June 20, 2025.

Buttler, who played under Gill’s captaincy at Gujarat Titans in the 2025 Indian Premier League, spoke highly of the 25-year-old’s temperament and maturity. In a conversation with Stuart Broad on a cricket podcast, Buttler noted that Gill blends the calm demeanor of Rohit with the fierce competitiveness of Kohli. According to him, Gill communicates with measured confidence and brings intensity on the field, drawing on lessons from both his predecessors while maintaining his unique leadership style.

Gill has previously captained India in five T20Is during the 2024 tour of Zimbabwe but has no Test captaincy experience. In his 32-match Test career so far, Gill has scored 1893 runs at an average of 35.05, including five centuries and seven half-centuries. However, he faces a major challenge in reversing his underwhelming overseas form, especially in England, where he has managed just 88 runs from three Tests. The upcoming series will be a significant test of his leadership and batting skills as India looks to maintain its strong home record against England.
