Frisco police and fire personnel responded to a reported water rescue call shortly before 1:30 p.m. Emergency crews arrived to find that a private construction crew had been working on a main water line when the pipe suddenly burst. Investigators said the rupture caused water to rapidly fill a trench box, also known as a safety box, that had been placed in the ground to protect workers during excavation.
Two contractors were inside the trench box at the time of the incident. Authorities said one worker was able to escape as water surged into the confined space. The second worker, however, became trapped as the underground access well quickly filled. First responders initiated rescue efforts, but the trapped worker was later found dead at the scene.
Officials have not released the identity of the deceased construction worker pending notification of next of kin. Details about the worker’s employer have also not been made public. The City of Frisco confirmed that the project was a private construction job and was not connected to municipal city works or infrastructure projects overseen by the city.
The circumstances leading to the water line rupture remain under investigation. It is not yet clear what caused the pipe to fail or whether any mechanical or procedural issues contributed to the accident. Authorities have indicated that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be involved in reviewing the fatal trench accident to determine whether workplace safety standards were followed and whether any violations occurred.
Construction sites involving underground access wells and trench boxes can pose significant hazards, particularly when crews are working around active water lines. A sudden pipe burst can rapidly change conditions, turning an excavation area into a dangerous environment within seconds. Safety protocols are designed to minimize such risks, but investigators will need to determine how the rupture unfolded and why one worker was unable to escape.
Police and fire officials secured the area for several hours as they conducted their preliminary investigation and coordinated with other agencies. Traffic in the vicinity of Eldorado Parkway and Independence Parkway was temporarily affected while emergency responders managed the scene.
The fatal incident marks another reminder of the risks associated with Texas construction projects, especially those involving underground utilities. OSHA’s investigation is expected to examine the worksite conditions, equipment used, and training procedures in place at the time of the accident. Authorities have not provided a timeline for when additional findings may be released.
Anyone with information related to the Frisco construction accident is encouraged to contact local authorities as the investigation continues.
