Indian-origin man attacked and racially abused in Melbourne gym incident
A 22-year-old Sikh nurse has alleged that he was subjected to a brutal racially motivated assault at a gym in Geelong, near Melbourne, late on February 17, prompting renewed concerns about hate crimes in Australia. The victim, identified as Harmanpreet Singh, said the incident occurred while he was working out at a gym in Corio at around 11 pm, when he was confronted by a group of three men.

According to Singh, the men approached him without provocation and began hurling racial slurs before the situation quickly escalated into physical violence. He alleged that the attackers called him an “Indian dog” and told him to return to his country, remarks that have raised serious concerns about racial abuse targeting members of the Indian diaspora and the Sikh community in Australia.

Singh reported that during the confrontation, one of the men moved aggressively close to him and deliberately struck him with his head, causing significant injury to his nose and heavy bleeding. The attacker allegedly fled the scene immediately after the assault. The victim said the incident left him shaken and physically hurt.

Speaking about the aftermath, Singh described the emotional toll of the encounter, saying he remains traumatised by both the violence and the verbal abuse. He noted that the incident was particularly distressing because it occurred while he was simply focused on his workout and not interacting with anyone. Singh added that although he tries to remain strong in the face of such behaviour, the experience has deeply affected his sense of safety.

The young nurse also expressed uncertainty about returning to the same gym, stating that he no longer feels secure in the environment where the alleged attack took place. His account has sparked broader discussion about the safety of minority communities and the need for continued vigilance against racially motivated incidents.

Authorities in Victoria are understood to be looking into the matter. The case has drawn attention from community members who are calling for strict action against those responsible and stronger measures to prevent similar incidents. The episode underscores ongoing concerns about racism and personal safety, particularly for visible minority groups, and has reignited debate about the importance of reporting and addressing hate-related offences promptly.

Community leaders have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward, while also encouraging victims of racial abuse to report such cases to ensure proper investigation and accountability. The incident remains under scrutiny as officials work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the alleged assault.
