Cloudburst In Uttarakhand’s Chamoli Kills One, Houses Flooded, Army Joins Rescue

Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district witnessed devastation on Friday night after a cloudburst caused widespread destruction in Tharali and nearby areas. Officials confirmed one death and at least one person missing as debris swept through homes, markets, and official buildings. The Tharali market area and the tehsil complex were buried under heavy sludge, while residential quarters, shops, and vehicles including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s residence were inundated. Panic spread in nearby Sagwara village after reports of a young girl trapped under debris, further intensifying the urgency of rescue operations. Several roads including Tharali-Gwaldam and Tharali-Sagwara were blocked due to landslides and flooding, cutting off local connectivity.

Local residents rushed out of their homes as water and debris entered their properties, with some shops in Chepdon market also damaged. Visuals from the site showed houses knee-deep in water and families attempting to salvage belongings. District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said extensive damage has been reported, while Additional District Magistrate Vivek Prakash confirmed that NDRF and SDRF teams reached the site quickly despite roads being blocked. Relief camps have been established to shelter displaced families.

The Indian Army swiftly mobilized troops, medical units, and search and rescue dog squads from Rudraprayag and Joshimath, joining hands with civil authorities to provide immediate relief. Additional resources are being moved to Chamoli as joint operations continue. Chamoli police also acted through the night to alert residents, moving many families to safer areas before conditions worsened. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that he is personally monitoring the situation, assuring that rescue and relief efforts are being prioritized.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, warning of very heavy rainfall across multiple districts of Uttarakhand including Dehradun, Nainital, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh until August 25. The region has faced a series of extreme weather events this season, with earlier cloudbursts in Harsil and Dharali leading to flash floods and major infrastructure damage. The latest tragedy underscores the recurring vulnerability of Uttarakhand’s hilly regions to cloudbursts and heavy rains, raising concerns over preparedness, urban safety, and disaster management. For now, locals remain evacuated, rescue teams continue operations, and authorities brace for further rainfall in the coming days.
