Woman in her 60s dies after medical emergency on Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion ride

A woman in her 60s died Monday after experiencing a medical emergency while riding the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, authorities confirmed. The incident prompted an immediate emergency response inside the park but was not linked to any malfunction or issue with the ride itself, police said.

According to Anaheim police spokesperson Matt Sutter, the woman suffered what was described as an “unfortunate medical episode” on the evening of October 6 while inside the Haunted Mansion ride. Disneyland security personnel quickly administered CPR after she became unresponsive. Emergency responders were dispatched to the park around 6:30 p.m. following reports of a guest in distress. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Police did not release the woman’s identity, pending notification of her family. Sutter confirmed that there was no indication of any technical or operational fault with the attraction. “The preliminary information does not suggest that the ride itself contributed to the medical episode,” he said. After emergency crews removed the guest from the scene, the Haunted Mansion was reopened to visitors later that evening.

The Haunted Mansion is one of Disneyland’s most iconic attractions, located in the New Orleans Square section of the park. The ride, which takes visitors through a dimly lit tour of a mansion filled with supernatural effects, animatronic ghosts, and eerie illusions, has been a guest favorite since it opened in 1969. It was one of the final projects personally overseen by Walt Disney before his death in 1966, and its legacy has continued through adaptations in other Disney parks worldwide, including those in Florida, Tokyo, and Paris.

Over the decades, the attraction has become a centerpiece of Disney’s storytelling tradition, blending technology, design, and atmosphere to create a family-friendly yet haunting experience. The ride typically lasts about eight minutes and uses an elaborate system of moving “doom buggies” to carry guests through scenes filled with ghostly apparitions and playful spirits. The experience is designed to evoke mild fright rather than fear, with a focus on the artistry and humor behind its spooky visuals.

Authorities emphasized that medical incidents can occur at amusement parks due to underlying health conditions or preexisting factors unrelated to the rides themselves. Guests with heart conditions, motion sensitivity, or other medical concerns are routinely advised to consider safety warnings posted at each attraction. Disneyland maintains on-site medical facilities and trained staff to respond rapidly to emergencies within the park.

The death comes amid a series of isolated medical incidents reported at major U.S. theme parks this year. Just last month, a 32-year-old man died after riding the Stardust Racers roller coaster at Universal’s Epic Universe theme park in Florida. In that case, park officials also said there was no evidence of mechanical failure, underscoring the unpredictable nature of medical emergencies in high-intensity or immersive environments.

Disneyland officials have not released a statement about the recent death but are cooperating fully with Anaheim police and emergency services. The park remained open following the incident, with normal operations resuming shortly after first responders cleared the area.

The Haunted Mansion has long held a special place in Disney’s history, inspiring merchandise, films, and seasonal overlays such as the popular “Haunted Mansion Holiday,” which features characters from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Its enduring popularity among guests reflects its balance of imagination, nostalgia, and artistry — qualities that continue to define Disneyland’s appeal across generations.

While the exact cause of the woman’s death will be determined by medical examiners, local authorities reiterated that the tragic event appears to have stemmed from a personal health emergency, not from any malfunction or safety lapse. Visitors and staff at the park expressed sympathy for the woman’s family and appreciation for the quick response by Disneyland personnel.

As investigations proceed, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of health awareness and the readiness of theme park teams to handle emergencies in environments designed for joy and entertainment. Despite the tragedy, officials stressed that Disneyland continues to maintain rigorous safety standards for all attractions, ensuring that millions of visitors each year can experience its rides and stories safely.
