Kartik Purnima 2025: Date, Puja Vidhi, Katha, Timings in India & USA, and Spiritual Significance

Kartik Purnima, also known as Dev Diwali or Tripurari Purnima, is one of the most sacred and spiritually uplifting festivals in the Hindu calendar. In 2025, it will be celebrated on Wednesday, 5th November, marking the conclusion of the holy month of Kartik — the “month of light.” Devotees across India and abroad honor this full moon day with prayers, fasting, charity, and by lighting thousands of lamps that symbolize the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

This auspicious day holds deep religious importance for devotees of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, who perform Kartik Snan (holy bath), Deep Daan (lamp offering), and elaborate pujas to seek divine blessings for purity, prosperity, and spiritual growth.

Puja Vidhi: A Step-by-Step Ritual Guide

  1. Kartik Snan (Holy Bath):
Begin the day with a bath in a holy river or at home using Ganga Jal. The ritual symbolizes inner purification, helping remove past sins and negative energy.
  2. Sankalp (Sacred Resolve):
Sit facing east and light a lamp. With folded hands, make a resolve (Sankalp) to observe the Kartik Purnima fast and pray for peace, prosperity, and the well-being of all living beings.
  3. Dhyana & Invocation:
Meditate upon Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva while chanting “Om Namo Vishnave Namah” and “Om Namah Shivaya.” Offer flowers, incense, and sandalwood paste as signs of devotion.
  4. Main Puja:
Set up a clean altar with idols or images of Vishnu and Shiva. Offer water, fruits, sweets, and light a diya in front of the deities. Performing the evening Sandhya Aarti is considered highly auspicious.
  5. Deep Daan (Lamp Offering):
At dusk or moonrise, light earthen diyas filled with ghee or oil along riverbanks, temples, verandas, or near tulsi plants. The glow of these lamps represents knowledge, hope, and divine grace overcoming ignorance and darkness.
  6. Charity and Bhakti:
Donating essentials like food, oil, ghee, or clothes to Brahmins, temples, and the needy is integral to Kartik Purnima. Acts of kindness done on this day are believed to multiply spiritual merit (punya).
  7. Aarti and Meditation:
Conclude the puja with “Om Jai Jagdish Hare” or other devotional hymns. Spend time in quiet reflection or meditation, feeling gratitude and divine connection.

Kartik Purnima Vrat Katha: The Legend of Tripurari Shiva

According to Hindu scriptures, the story of Kartik Purnima centers around Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura and his three sons — Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha, and Vidyunmali. These demons, after severe penance, received a boon from Lord Brahma granting them invincible flying cities — one of gold, one of silver, and one of iron. Protected by this power, they began spreading chaos across the heavens and earth.

The gods, terrified by their tyranny, approached Lord Shiva for help. To restore cosmic order, Shiva created a magnificent chariot — its wheels were the Sun and Moon, the bow made of the Himalayas, the string of Sheshanaga, and the arrow powered by Lord Agni (Fire). When the three flying cities aligned, Shiva shot his divine arrow, destroying all three at once, bringing peace back to the universe. From that moment, he was called Tripurari — the Destroyer of the Three Cities. Observing the Kartik Purnima fast and performing Deep Daan in remembrance of this event is believed to remove negativity, destroy karmic sins, and invite divine blessings.

Significance and Regional Celebrations

Kartik Purnima embodies light, purity, and spiritual elevation. It is believed that performing acts of devotion on this day is equivalent to performing thousands of yajnas (sacrifices). Devotees celebrate it differently across regions:

  • In Varanasi (Dev Diwali):
The Ganga ghats come alive with millions of diyas, offering a divine spectacle known as Dev Deepawali — the Diwali of the gods. It is said that on this day, deities descend to Earth to bathe in the holy Ganga.
  • In Odisha (Boita Bandana):
People float small boats made of banana bark or paper, symbolizing ancient maritime trade and paying homage to ancestors and sea voyagers.
  • In South India:
Temples of Lord Murugan, an aspect of Kartikeya, witness grand festivities, as this day is also celebrated as his birthday in many regions.

Fasting (Vrat Niyam) and Charity

Many devotees observe a full or partial fast, avoiding meat, garlic, onions, and alcohol. Meals are simple and sattvic (pure vegetarian). Donations made on Kartik Purnima especially of ghee, oil lamps, grains, and new clothes are believed to bring manifold blessings. Acts of charity (daan) and service (seva) performed today uplift the spirit, foster humility, and bring divine favor.

Kartik Purnima beautifully merges devotion, mythology, and light. It is a reminder that spiritual purity and generosity illuminate our inner selves just as diyas brighten the night. By taking the holy bath, performing puja, lighting lamps, fasting, and engaging in charity, devotees honor the victory of truth and divine will. As the full moon shines on Kartik Purnima 2025, may it bring you peace, positivity, and spiritual awakening, guiding your life toward light, harmony, and divine blessings.
