Chicago green fireball boom reports spread across the Midwest after a bright green object crossed the night sky over the Chicago area on a Monday night.
The source material did not provide a calendar date or exact time, but reports described sightings from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and Ohio.
Chicago Green Fireball Boom Reports Across the Midwest
Hundreds of people reported seeing a bright green fireball over the Chicago area and nearby Midwest states, prompting questions about whether the object was a meteor, a larger space rock or possible space debris burning up in Earth’s atmosphere.
Reports submitted to the American Meteor Society included sightings from Chicago suburbs such as Joliet, Addison, Waukegan and Carpentersville. Other reports came from northwest Indiana, Michigan and parts of the wider Midwest. Residents in areas including Grayslake and Arlington Heights also described boom-like sounds after the object passed overhead.
Meteor or Space Junk? Experts Say Identification Is Not Final
The object has not been definitively identified. Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said available videos and the apparent speed made the event look more like possible space junk than a typical meteor, potentially debris from a satellite or rocket.
Michelle Nichols, senior director of public programs at the Adler Planetarium, said a fireball is an unusually bright meteor created when material enters the atmosphere at high speed and burns up. Nichols said the object appeared to burn up before reaching the ground and was seen across several Midwest states.
She said available videos leaned toward a larger piece of space rock, while the possibility of space debris still requires further review.
Why the Sighting Drew Attention
Fireballs happen regularly around the world, but many occur over oceans or areas with few witnesses. This event drew wide attention because it crossed populated areas early in the evening, when more people were outside or had cameras nearby.
For skywatchers who missed the sighting, Nichols pointed to upcoming sky events including the Perseid meteor shower and a partial lunar eclipse in August.
