Mayawati Demands Action Against MP Minister Vijay Shah

In a sharp and politically charged statement, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has lashed out at Madhya Pradesh BJP Minister Vijay Shah over his controversial comments allegedly targeting Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. The issue has taken center stage in political discourse, sparking outrage both online and offline. The minister’s remarks during a public address in Mhow referring to ‘Operation Sindoor’ are being seen as communal and disrespectful towards a decorated army officer.

During the speech, Shah claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had sent a "sister from the same community" as Pakistan to avenge the April 22 terror strike in Pahalgam, Kashmir, an indirect reference that many interpreted as an attack on Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who is from the Muslim community. The comment has snowballed into a full-blown controversy, with multiple political leaders and citizens expressing anger over the communal tone of the statement.

Mayawati responded strongly via her official handle on X, stating that such uncivilized and derogatory remarks threaten the unity and morale of the nation. She emphasized that the success of ‘Operation Sindoor’, carried out by the Indian Army as a decisive response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack, had filled the nation with pride. However, Shah’s remarks have dampened the celebratory sentiment by injecting divisiveness and communal undertones into what should be a moment of national unity.

She added that the BJP and the Central Government must take serious note of the incident and act strictly against Vijay Shah. According to Mayawati, such statements from a senior political figure can embolden hostile forces and weaken the harmony that binds India’s diverse population. Her statement drew support from several corners, including civil society groups, retired army personnel, and opposition parties.

Facing mounting criticism, Madhya Pradesh BJP president V.D. Sharma held a closed-door meeting with Vijay Shah. Following the meeting, Shah issued a public clarification, stating that his words were misinterpreted and taken out of context. He added that Colonel Sofiya Qureshi had made the country proud and that his intention was never to insult her or question her patriotism. He extended an apology, saying, “We respect both sisters. I didn’t intend to hurt anyone.”

Despite the apology, the controversy is far from dying down. The Congress party launched a strong counterattack, accusing Shah of insulting the entire Indian Army. Congress leader Jitu Patwari held a press conference where he shared a clip of Shah’s speech and criticized the BJP for allowing such rhetoric. He called Shah’s remarks disgraceful, saying, “The brave daughters of our armed forces are being compared to terrorists. This is not just an insult to Colonel Qureshi, but to our entire army.”

Patwari demanded Shah’s immediate removal from the cabinet and warned that inaction from the Chief Minister would be viewed as silent endorsement of the offensive remarks. He also reminded the public of Shah’s controversial history, citing a 2013 incident where Shah was removed from the Cabinet for making derogatory comments against Sadhna Singh, wife of former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Colonel Sofiya Qureshi played a key role during Operation Sindoor, along with Wing Commander Vyomika Singh. Both officers were instrumental in providing timely and accurate media briefings during the mission, which was India’s tactical response to the April 22 terrorist strike in Kashmir that claimed 26 lives.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the BJP leadership will act against Shah or let the issue fade with his apology. With emotions running high, this controversy has not only exposed the volatile mix of politics and religion but also underscored the sensitivity required when referring to national security and military personnel. The developments continue to trend across social media and are expected to remain in the political spotlight for days to come.
