Indian-origin OPP Constable Tarun Bali was killed in the line of duty near Hearst, Ontario, after being struck by a vehicle during a police investigation, authorities said.
The incident happened at about 12:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, near Kendall Concession Road 7 and Concession Road 6, close to Hearst in northern Ontario.
Tarun Bali Killed During OPP Investigation Near Hearst
The Ontario Provincial Police said Bali, 29, was seriously injured while officers were conducting an investigation. He was later pronounced dead.
Bali was assigned to the Dufferin OPP Detachment in southern Ontario and had served with the force for about two and a half years. At the time of his death, he was deployed with the James Bay Detachment.
OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique called Bali’s death an “immeasurable loss” and said his courage and commitment to serving others would not be forgotten.
18-Year-Old Charged in OPP Officer’s Death
Police said an 18-year-old man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in Bali’s death. The accused also faces two counts of flight from police and two counts of dangerous driving.
According to police information cited in the case, the accused had escaped from a hospital where he was being assessed under the Mental Health Act. Officers were attempting to apprehend him when he allegedly struck Bali with a vehicle.
