Char Dham Yatra 2025 Begins: Gangotri and Yamunotri Portals Open with Traditional Ceremonies

The spiritually revered Char Dham Yatra officially began on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, with the ceremonial opening of the portals of Gangotri and Yamunotri Dhams in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. As thousands of devotees make their way to the sacred shrines nestled in the Himalayas, this annual pilgrimage continues to symbolize a deep confluence of devotion, tradition, and spiritual heritage. This year's yatra coincides with Akshaya Tritiya, an auspicious date in the Hindu calendar, marking a powerful beginning to the journey through India’s four sacred shrines Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. These four locations together form the Char Dham, one of the most important pilgrimages in Hinduism, believed to cleanse the soul and help attain moksha.

In a grand spiritual ceremony on Tuesday, the palanquin of Goddess Ganga was sent off from her winter abode in Mukba village. It paused for the night at Bhairav Temple in Bhairavghati before heading to the main shrine. Tirtha Purohit Rajesh Semwal confirmed that the palanquin arrived at Gangotri temple, where the temple doors were formally opened at 10:30 am with the recitation of Vedic mantras and traditional rituals. Simultaneously, the palanquin of Maa Yamuna began its journey from Kharsali, her winter residence, to Yamunotri Dham. The gates of Yamunotri were opened at 11:55 am, allowing devotees to offer their prayers at the sacred site.

On this occasion, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami extended his greetings to devotees. "Today, on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, the doors of Shri Yamunotri Dham and Shri Gangotri Dham will be formally opened for the devotees to visit. Char Dham Yatra - 2025 is going to start from today. This holy journey is a symbol of a unique confluence of faith, devotion and invaluable sentiments of Sanatan culture." He further added, “On behalf of the state government, all the devotees are welcomed and greeted for the Char Dham Yatra. It is our prayer that with the blessings of Maa Yamuna and Maa Ganga, may the life of all the devotees be blessed.”

The spiritual momentum continues as preparations are underway for the next two shrines. The portals of Kedarnath Dham will open on Friday, May 2. Ahead of the opening, the Panchmukhi idol of Lord Kedarnath was ceremonially dispatched from the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath on Monday following special pujas and prayers. Following that, Badrinath Dham will welcome devotees on Sunday, May 4, completing the full circle of the Char Dham pilgrimage.

The pilgrimage route is traditionally followed in a clockwise direction, beginning from Yamunotri, then proceeding to Gangotri, Kedarnath, and ending at Badrinath. Each shrine is deeply rooted in Sanatan Dharma and holds immense religious significance. The journey through the Himalayan shrines is not just about reaching divine locations but is also seen as a personal spiritual transformation for many devotees. Every year, the Char Dham Yatra draws lakhs of pilgrims from across India and around the world. The state government of Uttarakhand has undertaken elaborate arrangements to ensure the safety, convenience, and spiritual fulfillment of the devotees participating in this sacred journey. With spiritual energies high and the sacred shrines now open, the Char Dham Yatra 2025 is set to guide countless devotees on a journey of faith and inner awakening across the majestic Himalayan terrains.
