Over 60 fifth-grade students from Fairlands Elementary School in Pleasanton made a powerful impact on their school and city through a showcase of student-led service projects at the annual CAP Fair. Held on May 20, the fair gave students a platform to present 19 group initiatives that addressed pressing local and global issues.

Students spent months identifying problems in their communities, researching solutions, and taking meaningful action. From environmental conservation to public health and educational awareness, the projects demonstrated thoughtful execution and real-world impact.

Highlights included raising $700 to support students battling cancer, creating awareness tools around water contamination, and educating younger students about endangered axolotls alongside fundraising efforts to virtually adopt one. Another team raised funds for Odyssey Charter Schools affected by the Eaton Fire near Altadena, showcasing empathy and responsiveness to current events outside their own city.

According to Abbey Sneed, a fifth-grade teacher and the fair’s coordinator, the range of ideas and execution was remarkable. Students used their creativity, research, and collaboration skills to develop projects that embodied both academic learning and social responsibility. The fair brought together students from kindergarten through fifth grade, creating a ripple effect of awareness and inspiration throughout the school.

Pleasanton Mayor Jack Balch, a regular attendee of the event, praised the students’ leadership and dedication. He noted that their ability to take initiative without hesitation reflects the kind of future leaders the community is proud to raise. The CAP Fair has become a hallmark of student voice and purpose in Pleasanton, proving that even elementary students can lead meaningful change when given the chance.
