A long and emotional journey has finally come to a joyful end for a Plano, Texas family. Kathleen and Jordan Smith were officially reunited with their 7-year-old adopted daughter, Esther Smith, after a daring rescue mission from gang-controlled Haiti. The Smiths began the adoption process in December 2023, but it was halted due to escalating violence and the shutdown of the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince.
Esther’s safe return was made possible by Grey Bull Rescue, a specialized extraction team led by Bryan Stern. The mission involved flying a private jet to Cape Haitien, then navigating through volatile areas by helicopter. Gunfire in the capital forced the team to reroute, highlighting the extreme risks involved. Esther had been sheltered in a safe house prior to the operation.
Now safely in the U.S. on a visa, Esther is spending the summer getting to know her new family, including three siblings who eagerly awaited her arrival. The Smiths, thankful for support from Texas Congressman August Pfluger and many others, remain hopeful as the final legal steps of adoption continue. Their story is a powerful reminder of courage, faith, and the lengths to which a family will go to reunite with their child.
