A Washington man is facing a serious felony charge after allegedly throwing a sandwich at a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer during a late-night incident in Northwest D.C. According to U.S. District Court documents, Sean Charles Dunn was arrested and charged with felony assault following the confrontation that occurred around 11 p.m. near the intersection of 14th Street NW and U Street. Authorities allege that Dunn not only confronted the officers but also taunted them before hurling the wrapped sandwich at one of the agents.
Court records indicate that Dunn approached the officers, who included U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents and Metro Transit Police officers, referring to them as “fascists” and questioning their presence in the city. Witnesses say Dunn was holding a footlong sub during the exchange and was heard saying, “I don’t want you in my city.” After several minutes of verbal confrontation, Dunn allegedly threw the sandwich, still wrapped in wax paper, striking the officer in the chest. The targeted officer, later identified as a federal immigration agent, joined other officers in pursuing Dunn on foot through the busy corridor.
Law enforcement reports confirm that officers apprehended Dunn shortly after the incident. When taken into custody, Dunn reportedly admitted to the act, stating, “I did it. I threw a sandwich.” Prosecutors have charged Dunn with felony assault on a member of a police force, a serious offense under D.C. law that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison if convicted. Authorities say the nature of the charge stems from the requirement to prove that the act either caused significant bodily injury or posed a grave risk of causing such injury. Under the D.C. criminal code, significant bodily injury can include conditions like hospitalization, bone fractures, serious cuts requiring stitches, second-degree burns, loss of consciousness, or traumatic brain injury.
The Department of Justice has not released details about the officer’s condition following the incident. However, video evidence submitted to the court shows the agent continuing the chase after the sandwich made contact. While some onlookers have reacted with humor to the unusual nature of the alleged assault, federal prosecutors emphasize the seriousness of attacking law enforcement officers, regardless of the object used. The case also sparked online debate, with some users framing the act as a political statement, particularly as it coincided with heightened tensions in the city following a presidential executive order expanding federal authority over the Metropolitan Police Department.
U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro announced the charges, stressing that assaults on officers will not be tolerated. She characterized the incident as a misguided act that may have seemed humorous to the accused at the time but now carries potentially life-altering legal consequences. The case will proceed in U.S. District Court, where prosecutors will present video evidence, eyewitness accounts, and law enforcement testimony to support the charge. Dunn remains in custody pending further court hearings.
