The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing for a significant shake-up in its national selection committee just days after unveiling India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad. The board has opened applications for two vacant positions in the senior men’s selection panel, signaling a move towards restructuring ahead of the packed cricket calendar. Despite these changes, Ajit Agarkar will continue as the chief selector until 2026, given his successful track record in overseeing India’s recent international triumphs.
The eligibility for the positions remains strict, ensuring that only experienced cricketers take charge of national selection duties. Aspirants must have played at least 7 Test matches, or 30 First-Class games, or 10 ODIs with an additional 20 First-Class matches. Candidates must also have retired from the game at least five years prior and must not have served on any BCCI committee for more than five cumulative years. These requirements emphasize the board’s commitment to expertise and integrity in its selection process.
Reports suggest that S Sharath, a current selector, may be replaced by former India spinner Pragyan Ojha. Sharath is tipped to move to the junior men’s selection committee as chief, while the reshuffle could be formalized during the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September. Alongside changes in the men’s panel, the BCCI has also announced four openings in the women’s national selection committee and one in the junior men’s committee.
Agarkar’s Extension And Indian Team’s Achievements
Ajit Agarkar, who took over as chief selector in July 2023, has played a central role in India’s cricketing success over the last two years. Under his tenure, India reached the final of the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, lifted the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024, and went on to win the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. These achievements have cemented his position as chief selector and earned him an extension until June 2026, ensuring stability in the leadership of team selections.
A senior BCCI official highlighted that Agarkar’s tenure not only brought trophies but also guided smooth transitions in both the Test and T20 formats. His continued presence is expected to provide consistency as India heads into the 2025 Asia Cup, the 2026 ICC tournaments, and a crucial phase of player development.
