Peelander-Z, the Austin-based Japanese punk band, is receiving support from fans after a serious New Mexico I-40 crash left all three members hospitalized during their spring tour.
The crash happened on Monday afternoon, May 18, 2026, New Mexico time, while the band was traveling westbound on I-40 east of Albuquerque. KOB reported that authorities said a semi-truck rear-ended the band’s tour van less than an hour from the city. An exact crash time has not been publicly released.
GoFundMe Launched After Peelander-Z Tour Van Crash
The story continues to draw attention a week after the crash because of the band’s recovery needs and a fundraiser launched to help with medical costs. A GoFundMe campaign titled “Support Peelander Z’s Road to Recovery” was created by Dan Redman of Austin, Texas, on Friday, May 22, 2026.
The fundraiser says Peelander Yellow, Pink and Tiger were hospitalized with traumatic injuries after their van was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler while touring in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Band Members Remain Under Medical Care
KOB reported that all three members were taken to intensive care with injuries including broken bones, fractured vertebrae, broken ribs and other trauma. The band’s booking agent told KOB that Kengo, known as Yellow, had been taken off a ventilator, while doctors continued monitoring the members and conducting surgeries and medical testing.
Austin Monthly reported that two members were still in ICU as of Saturday afternoon, May 23, 2026. The report said Yellow was in stable condition and breathing on his own, Pink had undergone surgery for multiple broken bones, and Tiger was being monitored after a skull fracture.
Tour Dates Canceled as Recovery Continues
Peelander-Z canceled upcoming performances after the crash. KOB reported that the band’s tour van, some equipment and personal belongings were considered a total loss. Local bands were also planning benefit events to support the group’s recovery.
The crash is no longer a same-day breaking story, but it remains a developing recovery story for fans of the long-running Austin punk band. With medical treatment ongoing and the fundraiser continuing to grow, the focus has shifted from the crash itself to Peelander-Z’s recovery, tour losses and support from the music community.
