In a terrifying incident at Benbrook Lake, Tarrant County, Texas, 14 people were injured after a bolt of lightning struck a canopy during a fast-moving storm on Sunday evening, June 1. According to Cresson Fire Chief Ron Becker, the group was attempting to hold down the canopy when the lightning hit, sending a shock through the structure and surrounding area.
The storm swept through the region with high winds and heavy rain. As the group took shelter under the canopy, a lightning bolt struck not only the canopy but also a nearby tree and vehicle. The sudden strike caused panic and injuries among the 14 individuals present.
Emergency responders treated 12 people on the scene for minor injuries, while two individuals were transported to a hospital for further medical attention. Fortunately, their injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
This lightning event was part of a larger storm system that affected North Texas. The same storm produced hailstones large enough to damage vehicles and property in parts of Tarrant County, including Arlington. Residents reported sirens sounding in Oak Cliff, and viewers shared images and videos of significant hailfall around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
Authorities urge the public to take cover indoors and avoid outdoor shelters like canopies during severe weather conditions, especially lightning storms. The incident is a stark reminder of how quickly Texas weather can turn dangerous, and officials continue to monitor conditions across the region.
