The Resilient Spirit of Fauja Singh: A Marathon Legend's Story

Fauja Singh, a name that has become synonymous with resilience and determination, passed away at the age of 114 on July 14, 2025, after an accident in his hometown of Beas Pind, Jalandhar. Known for starting his marathon running career at 89, Fauja Singh defied age and physical challenges to become an international inspiration, earning the admiration of millions around the globe.

Born in India and later relocating to the UK, Fauja’s life was shaped by personal tragedies. After losing his wife and daughter, he moved to Ilford, England, where a chance encounter with a local running club changed the course of his life. What began as a way to cope with his grief transformed into a lifelong passion, leading him to compete in marathons around the world, including those in London, New York, and Hong Kong.

Fauja’s running feats were remarkable for any athlete, let alone someone in his 90s and beyond. He clocked astonishing times and even became the torchbearer at the 2012 London Olympics, an honor awarded to him for his incredible contribution to sport and charity. Despite not having official documentation of his birth, Fauja set world records at the age of 100, though the Guinness World Records did not recognize them. His dedication to charity was equally inspiring, as he donated all the prize money from his marathons to good causes.

What truly set Fauja Singh apart was his simple, disciplined lifestyle and his deep-rooted belief in the strength of the community. Despite traveling the world and gaining fame, he never asked for special treatment. He was a man who lived by the philosophy of "Sangat saambh laigi" (the community will take care of me), epitomizing the selfless spirit that made him a beloved figure worldwide. Fauja’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to start over and that determination and perseverance can triumph over life’s greatest challenges.
