As Thanksgiving Day 2025 arrives, many households will spend the holiday preparing meals, hosting gatherings, and enjoying time with family. Yet it is also a day when some people inevitably need to make a last-minute run for ingredients, or choose to stop by a store or café during their celebrations. Holiday schedules vary widely across the country, and several major grocery chains and retailers have updated their hours in anticipation of the seasonal rush. With Thanksgiving 2025 expected to bring heavy demand for convenience shopping, many consumers are looking for clarity on which stores will keep their doors open and which will remain closed.
A number of grocery chains will operate with modified hours to accommodate holiday shoppers. Albertsons locations, including Safeway and Tom Thumb, plan to stay open until 4 p.m., while Market Street stores will not open at all. Kroger stores are scheduled to open but will close earlier than usual at 5 p.m. Sprouts locations will operate a shorter day, opening at 7 a.m. and closing at 2 p.m. Whole Foods stores will remain open, though individual locations will follow adjusted hours that vary depending on local demand. Central Market stores in Texas will also be open until 2 p.m., offering another option for midday grocery purchases. H-E-B will maintain limited access, with stores closing at noon and offering curbside pickup and delivery services in the morning. Fiesta Mart is among the few chains extending service later into the day, staying open until 7 p.m.
Several national discount retailers will also open their doors on the holiday. Most Dollar General stores expect to operate on adjusted schedules, and Dollar Tree plans to open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Family Dollar intends to keep the majority of its stores open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., though exceptions may occur depending on location. Big Lots stores are set to open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A number of CVS pharmacies will be available, typically from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., providing access to essential items. Coffee chains including Dunkin and Starbucks are expected to open in many locations, though hours will vary. Krispy Kreme shops will welcome customers until 2 p.m.
At the same time, many major retailers continue the recent trend of closing for Thanksgiving. Aldi, Costco, Target, Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Trader Joe’s will keep all locations closed for the entire day. Several popular home and apparel stores, including T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods, will also remain closed. Hardware and electronics chains such as Home Depot and Best Buy will shut their doors in observance of the holiday. Walgreens expects most of its locations to close as well, with the exception of select 24-hour stores that will continue to operate.
As consumer habits shift toward spending the holiday with loved ones, retailers are increasingly adjusting their operations to reflect the national preference for rest and gathering. Even so, a considerable number of stores will remain open in some capacity for shoppers who need last-minute groceries or household essentials. For anyone planning to shop on Thanksgiving Day, checking local hours remains essential, as individual store schedules may differ across regions.
