Tamil Nadu Poll Campaign Ends Today As DMK And AIADMK Alliances Face Off

Chennai: The intense campaign for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026 will come to an end today, marking the start of the mandatory silent period ahead of voting scheduled on April 23. Over the past few weeks, the state has witnessed a high-energy political battle, with top national and regional leaders holding rallies, roadshows, and public meetings across all 234 constituencies.

Prominent leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, and Delhi’s former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal actively campaigned for their respective alliances. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin led the charge for the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, while AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami spearheaded the campaign for the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance.

The election is shaping up to be a fierce contest between the two major alliances. The DMK is contesting in 164 constituencies, leaving 70 seats to its allies, while the AIADMK is contesting 169 seats with its partners fielding candidates in 65 constituencies. Key campaign issues included development, central fund allocation, corruption allegations, and debates over governance, along with sharp personal attacks between rival leaders.

What adds a new dimension to this election is the entry of actor-turned-politician Vijay, whose Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has fielded candidates across all constituencies, aiming to emerge as a strong third force. Actor-politician Kamal Haasan also joined the campaign trail, supporting the DMK alliance, further intensifying the political atmosphere.

The presence of multiple parties has turned the election into a closely watched multi-cornered contest. Alongside the two major alliances, Naam Tamilar Katchi led by Seeman is contesting all 234 seats, adding to the competitive landscape. Analysts believe that the performance of emerging players could influence the final outcome in several constituencies.

As campaigning concludes, all eyes are now on voter turnout and the silent period that begins tonight. The results, scheduled to be announced on May 4, will determine whether the ruling DMK retains power or if the AIADMK-led alliance stages a comeback. The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the state’s political future.
