How World Music Day Began

The celebration began in France on Monday, June 21, 1982. It was introduced by the French Ministry of Culture under Culture Minister Jack Lang, with composer and music administrator Maurice Fleuret playing an important role in its development.

The date was linked to the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, when longer daylight hours made outdoor performances easier. The French phrase “Faites de la musique,” meaning “Make music,” also echoes Fête de la Musique, or “Festival of Music.”

How the Celebration Became Global

What started as a French cultural event later expanded internationally. The French Culture Ministry says the celebration is observed in more than 100 countries, while Make Music Day reports participation across more than 2,000 cities.

In the United States, events are often promoted under the Make Music Day name. Programs may include public concerts, beginner workshops, group performances and opportunities for local musicians to appear before new audiences.
