Shriners Children’s Chicago is marking 100 years of pediatric specialty care in 2026, recognizing a century of treatment, therapy and family support. Founded in 1926 by the Medinah Shriners of Chicago, the hospital began by providing free orthopedic treatment to children during the polio epidemic.

Shriners Children’s Chicago Marks a Century of Care

The hospital later treated children affected by bone tuberculosis and other serious conditions that have become less common because of vaccines and medical advances. Its services have evolved with medical technology, but its central mission has remained focused on improving children’s lives.

For Cassandra Graham, that mission is personal. Her son, James, has received care at the hospital since he was two weeks old, following a diagnosis of osteogenesis imperfecta, commonly called brittle bone disease.

Graham said the medical team has consistently treated James with care and respect while helping the family manage his complex medical needs.

Coordinated Pediatric Specialty Care for Families

Kara Miller, the hospital’s marketing and communications manager, said the organization is proud to have served children on its Chicago campus for a century. The milestone honors the patients, families, physicians, therapists and supporters who have contributed to the hospital’s work since 1926.

Dr. Jeffrey D. Ackman said Shriners Children’s Chicago accepts patients regardless of their ability to pay and coordinates multiple services at one location. Children can meet with physicians and receive therapy on the same campus, reducing some of the logistical burden associated with specialized treatment.

The centennial reflects the hospital’s transformation from an orthopedic facility established during a public health crisis into a pediatric specialty care provider serving families from Chicago and beyond. It also highlights the continuing importance of coordinated treatment for children living with complex medical conditions.
