Pensacola police investigate deadly July 4 shooting
A 19-year-old man was killed and six others were injured in a mass shooting in downtown Pensacola, Florida, early on July 4, according to police. Officers responded to reports of gunfire at about 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Palafox and Intendencia streets, where large crowds had gathered after a fireworks display. Police said children, teenagers and young adults were present as part of what officials described as a “teen takeover” in the downtown area.
Authorities said the crowd situation had become tense before the shooting, with fights breaking out and some people throwing mortar-style fireworks at each other. Officers attempted life-saving measures on the 19-year-old victim, including CPR, but he died at the scene. The six other victims, ranging in age from 16 to 26, were taken for medical treatment. Police said they believe the injured victims are expected to survive.
Extra officers were deployed downtown
Pensacola Police Chief Eric Winstrom said the department had increased its presence downtown because of concerns about possible holiday disruptions. According to police, about 50 additional officers were assigned to the area for July 4 events, but the added security did not prevent the shooting. Winstrom said someone was still willing to commit an act of violence despite the larger police presence.
The police chief also said he met with the mother of the 19-year-old victim, describing her as devastated and demanding justice. He said investigators would do everything possible to provide answers for the family. Multiple people were arrested at the scene for general disturbances, but police said none of those arrests were connected to homicide charges.
Search continues for suspects
Investigators have not identified a suspect and have not confirmed whether one person or multiple assailants opened fire. Police said the behavior in the crowd before the shooting was frightening and created a dangerous environment for officers, residents and visitors. Authorities are asking local residents, witnesses and anyone with video or information to help identify the person or people responsible.
The Pensacola shooting has raised fresh public safety concerns around large youth gatherings, holiday crowds and downtown celebrations. For the victim’s family and the injured survivors, the July 4 event turned from a holiday gathering into a deadly crime scene that remains under active investigation.
