Jason Sanjay, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay, is preparing to enter the film industry in a new role — as a director. With his debut film Sigma nearing its theatrical release, the 25-year-old filmmaker has opened up about the challenge of building an identity of his own while carrying a well-known family name.

In a recent conversation with Galatta Plus, Jason was asked how he thinks audiences perceive him — as Vijay's son, the son of a superstar and Chief Minister, or simply as Jason Sanjay, a filmmaker making his directorial debut.

Jason admitted that the question has crossed his mind many times. He acknowledged that his family's legacy will always remain a part of his journey, particularly at a time when his father's career has moved from cinema into politics.

Jason Sanjay Wants His Work to Define Him

While he is aware of the attention surrounding his family background, Jason said he has been concentrating on his own creative vision while making Sigma.

The young filmmaker explained that he is working within his own creative space and wants to establish himself through the film he has made. According to Jason, once audiences start watching Sigma, the focus will naturally shift from his surname to the work on screen.

He believes that the film's response, whether positive or negative, will ultimately help audiences understand him as a director.

Jason also sees Sigma as the beginning of a longer filmmaking journey. He hopes the exposure from his debut will allow him to continue developing his career and establish a distinct identity in the industry.

Jason Sanjay Opens Up About Vijay's Other Side

Jason also spoke about the side of Vijay that he would like to explore as a filmmaker.

Rather than focusing only on the larger-than-life image associated with Vijay's recent films, Jason said he particularly enjoys his father's sense of humour and the more relaxed, playful side he has seen at home.

He explained that Vijay has an inner-child-like quality and expressed interest in bringing out that aspect if he ever gets an opportunity to direct his father.

According to Jason, Vijay's filmography has not always allowed him to explore such relatable and light-hearted characters, and he would like to see that side of the actor on screen.

All Eyes on Sigma

Sigma marks Jason Sanjay's directorial debut and stars Sundeep Kishan and Faria Abdullah in the lead roles. The film is presented as an action-adventure entertainer with heist elements and is produced by Lyca Productions.

The cast also includes Raju Sundaram, Sampath Raj, Shiv Panditt, Anbu Thasan and Yog Japee. Music for the film is composed by S Thaman, while Krishnan Vasant handles cinematography and Praveen KL is the editor.

The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on October 2, 2026.
