Congress Infighting? Revanth Reddy Counters Digvijaya Singh With Sonia Gandhi Praise

Fresh signs of internal tension have emerged within the Congress after Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy appeared to counter senior party leader Digvijaya Singh through a social media post praising the leadership of Sonia Gandhi. The back-to-back posts by the two Congress leaders have triggered political chatter, with many interpreting the exchange as a reflection of ideological and strategic divisions within the party.

The controversy began when Digvijaya Singh shared a throwback photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the 1990s, highlighting the organisational strength of the BJP and its ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Singh praised how a grassroots worker of the RSS and BJP could rise to become both a chief minister and eventually the prime minister, calling it a testament to the power of organisation. His post drew mixed reactions within the Congress, with some leaders supporting the call for organisational strengthening and others criticising the praise of the RSS.

A day later, Revanth Reddy entered the debate with a pointed post highlighting Sonia Gandhi’s role in elevating leaders from the political margins to the highest office in the country. He cited the examples of P V Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh, noting that both rose to become prime ministers under Sonia Gandhi’s leadership. Reddy emphasised that Narasimha Rao began his public life in a remote village in Telangana, while Manmohan Singh was an economist with no mass political base, yet both were entrusted with leading the nation.

Although the Congress is marking its 140th anniversary, making praise for Sonia Gandhi appear routine, the timing of Reddy’s post led many to see it as a direct rebuttal to Digvijaya Singh’s remarks. Political observers argue that the episode underscores an ongoing debate within the party about its future direction.

The row has exposed contrasting viewpoints among senior Congress leaders. Shashi Tharoor supported Digvijaya Singh, stating that discussions on strengthening the organisation are natural and necessary. Tharoor, a member of the G23 group, has long advocated internal democracy and reforms within the party.

On the other hand, Congress MP Manickam Tagore strongly criticised the RSS, comparing it to extremist organisations and asserting that there is nothing the Congress can learn from it. His remarks were widely seen as a counter not just to the RSS but also to Singh’s praise of its structure.

Revanth Reddy’s intervention has added another layer to the debate, highlighting what analysts describe as two competing strains within the Congress. One camp appears focused on organisational overhaul and learning from rivals, while the other stresses loyalty to the Nehru-Gandhi legacy and maintaining the party’s traditional leadership structure. As these disagreements play out publicly, questions are being raised about unity within the party at a crucial political moment.
